Varsity Tutors is seeking online College Algebra tutors on a flexible, independent-contractor basis. You’ll work from home, set your own schedule, and earn competitive rates while helping students succeed in College Algebra.

Tutors use the Live Learning Platform and AI Copilot to assist with instruction, while invoicing and payments are handled by the platform. This role offers the freedom to tutor as much as you’d like and to connect with students nationwide.

Qualifications

• Must have deep knowledge of college algebra topics and be able to explain concepts clearly.
• Able to adapt instruction to student needs and use real-world examples.
• Experience with online tutoring and virtual whiteboard tools is preferred.

What We Look For In a College Algebra Tutor

• Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of polynomial functions, rational expressions, exponential and logarithmic functions, systems of equations and inequalities, matrices, complex numbers, sequences, series, and the binomial theorem. Ability to explain function transformations, composition, inverses, and asymptotic behavior while preparing students for college-level calculus and quantitative reasoning requirements.
• Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at breaking down polynomial division, logarithmic equations, and piecewise function analysis. Guides students through modeling real-world scenarios with exponential growth and decay, solving systems using matrix methods, and analyzing rational function behavior. Emphasizes algebraic reasoning over rote memorization and connects concepts to business, economics, and natural science applications.
• Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with college algebra curricula and common challenges such as logarithm properties, rational function graphing, and solving nonlinear systems. Adapts instruction using graphing technology, real-world data modeling exercises, and diagnostic assessments to support students from developmental math through college placement and STEM prerequisite readiness.
• Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
• Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
