Job summary

Xylem is a Fortune 500 global water solutions company seeking an Application Engineer IV to design and deliver complex wastewater and process water solutions across multiple markets. You will work with a direct sales team, review specifications, perform mass balances, and size pumps while developing robust PFDs and P&IDs to meet customer needs.

The role emphasizes technical leadership, collaboration with engineers and sales, and the ability to present solutions and manage risk across projects.

Qualifications

  • Requires BS/BA in Chemical Engineering; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of relevant experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of water treatment processes to achieve customer outcomes.
  • Advanced competency in standard equipment platforms and their use.
  • Ability to source and apply advanced 3rd party components in new applications.
  • Leads others in executing complex tasks and projects.
  • Collaborates across disciplines in a team environment.
  • Strong understanding of sales processes, proposals, costing and risk.

  • Perform hydraulic calculations and pump sizing.
  • Select equipment and materials for costing.
  • Identify technical and commercial risks.
  • Develop conceptual, budgetary and firm proposals.
  • Present technical solutions to customers.
  • Support bid/no-bid and go/no-go decisions.
  • Train and mentor other engineers.

The Application Engineer IV will focus on complex wastewater and process water solutions across markets such as microelectronics, food & beverage, mining, power, pulp & paper, and chemical processing. The wastewater systems typically consist of equalization, pH neutralization, chemical precipitation, clarification, Dissolved Air Floatation (DAF), media filtration, ultra filtration, reverse osmosis, sludge thickening, and dewatering. The process water systems typically consist of media filtration, softening, carbon filtration, ultra filtration, reverse osmosis, Clean-In-Place (CIP) systems, regenerable Ion Exchange (IX), and Continuous Electrodeionization (CEDI).

The Application Engineer IV operates independently determining proper design and approach for solving customer requirements and provides training and direction for other engineers.

  • Develop Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Process & Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Prepare mass balances and water balances
  • Perform hydraulic calculations and pump sizing
  • Equipment selection and material selection which can be used for costing
  • Identify technical and commercial risks
  • Develop conceptual, budgetary and firm proposals
  • Present technical solutions to customers
  • Support bid/no-bid and go/no-go decisions
  • Train and mentor other engineers
Position Requirements
  • Requires BS/BA degree in Chemical Engineering; Master’s degree preferred
  • 8+ yrs of relevant experience
  • Advanced knowledge of business tools, processes and procedures.
  • Technical expert in understanding water treatment processes to achieve customer desired outcome.
  • Advanced competency in all standard equipment platforms and their employment.
  • Ability to source and apply advanced 3rd party components in new applications.
  • Able to lead others in the execution of complex tasks and projects.
  • Effectively collaborates with other disciplines in a team environment.
  • Solid understanding of the sales process and how organizational role influences the outcome.
  • Solid understanding of financial principles related to proposals, costing, business outcome and risk mitigation.
  • Solid understanding of contractual terms and conditions.
  • Advanced ability to develop execution strategy and guide others while mitigating business risk.
  • Possesses excellent communications skills and can effectively present advanced technical information in a customer setting.
  • Conducts training and seeks to motivate and develop the organization to achieve greater results.
