Job summary

Xylem is seeking an Application Engineer IV to design complex wastewater and process water solutions across multiple markets from their Houston-area operations. You will work with the direct sales team, review RFQs, perform process design calculations, and develop PFDs/P&IDs to meet customer needs.

The role requires a BS in Chemical Engineering with 8+ years of experience and a strong grasp of water treatment technologies. Advanced communication and mentoring skills are essential for success.

Qualifications

  • BS/BA in Chemical Engineering required.
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in water treatment or process engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of water treatment processes and equipment selection.
  • Ability to review RFQs and technical specs.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills for customers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and optimization of wastewater and process water systems.
  • Develop PFDs and P&IDs for project scope.
  • Perform mass and water balances for system sizing.
  • Carry out hydraulic calculations and pump sizing.
  • Select equipment and materials with cost considerations.
  • Identify technical and commercial risks in proposals.
  • Prepare conceptual, budgetary, and firm proposals.
  • Present technical solutions to customers and sales teams.
  • Support bid/no-bid and go/no-go decisions.
  • Train and mentor junior engineers.

The Application Engineer IV will focus on complex wastewater and process water solutions across markets such as microelectronics, food & beverage, mining, power, pulp & paper, and chemical processing. The wastewater systems typically consist of equalization, pH neutralization, chemical precipitation, clarification, Dissolved Air Floatation (DAF), media filtration, ultra filtration, reverse osmosis, sludge thickening, and dewatering. The process water systems typically consist of media filtration, softening, carbon filtration, ultra filtration, reverse osmosis, Clean-In-Place (CIP) systems, regenerable Ion Exchange (IX), and Continuous Electrodeionization (CEDI).

The Application Engineer IV operates independently determining proper design and approach for solving customer requirements and provides training and direction for other engineers.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

  • Perform process design calculations
  • Develop Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Process & Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Prepare mass balances and water balances
  • Perform hydraulic calculations and pump sizing
  • Equipment selection and material selection which can be used for costing
  • Identify technical and commercial risks
  • Develop conceptual, budgetary and firm proposals
  • Present technical solutions to customers
  • Support bid/no-bid and go/no-go decisions
  • Train and mentor other engineers
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • Requires BS/BA degree in Chemical Engineering; Master’s degree preferred
  • 8+ yrs of relevant experience
  • Advanced knowledge of business tools, processes and procedures.
  • Technical expert in understanding water treatment processes to achieve customer desired outcome.
  • Advanced competency in all standard equipment platforms and their employment.
  • Ability to source and apply advanced 3rd party components in new applications.
  • Able to lead others in the execution of complex tasks and projects.
  • Effectively collaborates with other disciplines in a team environment.
  • Solid understanding of the sales process and how organizational role influences the outcome.
  • Solid understanding of financial principles related to proposals, costing, business outcome and risk mitigation.
  • Solid understanding of contractual terms and conditions.
  • Advanced ability to develop execution strategy and guide others while mitigating business risk.
  • Possesses excellent communications skills and can effectively present advanced technical information in a customer setting.
  • Conducts training and seeks to motivate and develop the organization to achieve greater results.
