Job Purpose
PHINIA is seeking a dynamic Application Engineer to support the Starter and Alternator business. The Application Engineer serves as the technical liaison for Delco Remy (DR) Alternator and Starter OEM commercial vehicle customers and aftermarket customers. You will relay customer needs to PHINIA product engineering, drive quality improvements, support special projects, and define product specifications, features, and validation plans to meet customer requirements. You will also work with customers to support new applications for existing or new product technologies and identify opportunities for product development.
Key Responsibilities
- Team Focus: manage day-to-day activities as a member of customer teams, working with the appropriate Account Manager and supporting other Application Engineering team members, Fleet Managers, Regional Managers, Product Engineering, and Operations.
- Customer Focus: interface with customer design engineering to drive implementation of PHINIA commercial vehicle products in future vehicle designs; act as the technical liaison between the customer and PHINIA Engineering, Quality, and Sales teams; review progress, evaluate results, and suggest changes as needed.
- Technical Focus: apply knowledge of electrical and mechanical engineering theory related to rotating electrics and commercial vehicle applications; communicate clearly across teams and participate in relevant industry group activities.
Job Duties
- Collaborate with customer engineering groups to understand customer applications and operational requirements.
- Maintain direct contact for all engineering/technical activities for assigned customers, including application or release engineering, and liaison for customer vehicle/application data to PHINIA Engineering and Design.
- Develop Bill of Requirements/Bill of Specifications to confirm compliance with customer specifications and capabilities.
- Coordinate Advanced Engineering, Service Engineering, Quality Engineering, Production Control, and Purchasing as needed.
- Serve as liaison for customer vehicle/application data and coordinate with PHINIA Engineering for current and future product development.
- Network with customer advanced engineering groups to identify future opportunities and keep PHINIA Engineering updated with customer technical requirements through reports and meetings.
- Provide training, troubleshooting, vehicle instrumentation, and technical services; assist in customer technical presentations and design reviews.
- Assist Account Manager with RFQs and advise PHINIA Engineering/Design on customer requirements.
- Determine Change Management system disposition, Engineering Lab Order process and reporting, and maintain customer data book applications.
- Organize and facilitate problem-solving groups; produce reports on new test products and field test units.
- Visit customer manufacturing sites annually to review practices and product applications; attend customer meetings as determined by the Application Engineering Manager.
Job Requirements & Skills
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in a technical/engineering role; customer interface experience preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree (BSEE or BSME preferred).
- Experience with commercial vehicle manufacturers and/or dealerships is a plus.
- Strong understanding of engineering theory related to designated field; knowledge of electro-mechanical and commercial vehicle systems preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with internal and external partners.
- Strong analytical, statistical, and problem-solving abilities; capable of solving complex problems requiring judgment.
- Knowledge of plant operations and processes; ability to manage multiple projects.
- Product/program management skills; strong manufacturing engineering, product development, supplier interaction, and statistical skills.
- Knowledge of metrics, competitive benchmarks, and standards; high level of technical proficiency.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, Outlook).
- Ability to travel up to 25% of the time to customer and plant sites (regional and global).
