Job Description

This position requires teaching undergraduates, and applicants must provide evidence of teaching potential. Teaching faculty at Owens Community College are responsible for supporting student success by creating an optimum learning environment, responding to student needs, managing effective instructional activities, demonstrating professionalism, developing cooperative work relationships with other faculty and staff, supporting college administrative requirements, and maintaining competency in their instructional field.

This position teaches college‑level & pre‑college level Science Composition courses and Science related courses. Understanding of process based writing. Familiarity with adult learning theory. Familiarity with current pedagogical strategies that will enhance critical thinking with students. Effectively communicate with students on a regular basis. Provide students with regular feedback on progress. Ability to work in a collaborative environment. Ability to enhance instruction with use of technology. Effective classroom management. Enthusiasm for teaching and learning.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• A thorough knowledge of the principles of Physical Sciences to an extent where the successful candidate would be comfortable in teaching courses from basic Physical Sciences to College level Physical Sciences.
• Knowledge of student‑centered, tutoring strategies.
• Knowledge of Microsoft software.
• Familiarity with appropriate instructional and course management software.
• Verbal and written interpersonal communications skills.
• Computer skills including Microsoft software.
• The ability to communicate effectively with both small and large groups.
• Proficiency in designing and grading tests.

Essential Functions

Engages in Other Department‑Related Activities

• Attends Department and College workshops, training sessions, and development activities as needed.
• Attends Department and College meetings as necessary.
• Participates in student learning assessment activities.
• Performs other departmental duties, as assigned.

Daily Teaches Classes

• Develops a syllabus for the class using the assigned syllabus shell, including designing an evaluation procedure that falls within the parameters of the syllabus shell and creating a calendar of assignments in accordance with the course outline.
• Prepares lesson plans and conducts classes during the scheduled times using the Department‑approved text(s).
• Follows Department guidelines for course content and best practices.
• Meets classes on all scheduled dates during the assigned semester.
• Meets classes on time and holds classes for their fully allotted time.
• If teaching online, respects the Owens Community College Standards for Web Instruction.
• Uses appropriate classroom management techniques.
• Uses appropriate means and methods of technology.

Daily Creates and Maintains Assignments, Evaluative Measures, and Records

• Creates and evaluates assignments, evaluative measures, and activities appropriate to the class.
• Assigns grades to student work.
• Returns the graded assignments, evaluative measures, and activities to the students in a timely manner. Maintains the general guideline of returning student work and posting grades within a week.
• Maintains the general guideline of accurate and thorough records of student attendance.
• Reports student attendance as required, by the published deadline.
• Maintains an accurate and thorough electronic grade book.
• At the end of the term, reports grades to the Records Office by the deadline and submits electronic copies of grade book and attendance to the Department course management site.
• Administers course evaluations as instructed by the College.

Weekly Communicates Effectively

• Uses the College’s course management system for assigned courses and department matters as appropriate.
• Uses MS Office Suite and/or other required (and Owens‑system‑compatible and approved) programs.
• Submits electronic copies of all requested documents (including syllabi, grade books, attendance records, and other files as required) to the Department course management site.
• Accesses Owens email account at least once a day to communicate adequately with students and with the Department Chair. Maintains the general guideline of reading and replying to all required messages within 48 hours.
• Checks campus mailbox at least once a week.
• Responds to student inquiries outside of class in a timely manner.
• Is available to meet additionally with students outside of class, if necessary.
