Job Summary
Responsible for the management of reporting APPs and APP supervisors including all activities related to direct and facilitated patient care, service line development, quality improvement goals strategic planning and protocol or policy enforcement, including APP clinical work product at top of scope or adherence to the Hospital Playbook. Assesses maximal effectiveness and efficiency of staffing plan including experience, skill mix, and the development of staffing systems which respond effectively and quickly to changing patient volumes, acuity and service demands. Mentors and coaches and completes APPs administrative duties such as hiring, onboarding process, orientation process development and implementation performance evaluations, OPPE/FPPE, etc. Represents APPs to outside review services such as Joint Commission, American College of Surgeons etc.
Position will typically be 50% administrative and 50% clinical in area of expertise or as determined by the APP Director or VP of APP Services.
Note: This is a 40-hour position and may include off shifts, weekends, and holidays as required by the service. This position will provide leadership to APPs within the identified specialty service(s) with the potential for expansion of role to include other APP teams as determined by needs of the APP structure and determined by APP Director.
Essential Functions
- Collaborates with regional and service line leadership to identify strategic clinical growth and process improvement. Participates in regional, service line and leadership meetings/committees as requested.
- Continual evaluation of APP workforce and duties as compared to clinical need, approves and forwards the requests of additional APP staffing to the APP Director and Service line VP.
- Actively works with the APP Director on issues of APP recruitment, retention and recognition.
- Ensure financial integrity and planning for area of responsibility by regularly reviewing billing practices and monitoring metrics such as reimbursement, productivity, and utilization.
- Act as central oversight for CE/CME policy including review and approval of CE/CME related expenses consistent with the policy within the department/section.
- Assist with the development of clinically relevant peer review and quality metrics. May assist with individual chart reviews as required for ongoing professional evaluation.
- Advise with the development of a focused professional practice evaluation (FPPE) in collaboration with local physician leadership.
- Continual management of change in service line with bidirectional communication between APP Director and service line leaders to APP Supervisors and APPs. APP Student education placement.
- Oversight and development of clinical training including orientation process development and implementation, service line education, billing/coding.
- Manage the performance of all APPs in area of responsibility by conducting formal performance evaluations, including providing coaching and mentoring opportunities, developing improvement plans, and coordinating disciplinary processes as needed. This includes distribution and collection of feedback from interdisciplinary teams which may include faculty, residents, and peers.
- General oversight of schedule and close work with APP Supervisors on unexpected changes/replacements.
- Work clinically in 50% in area of clinical expertise, or as determined by APP Director.
Supervision Received
- The APP Manager will have dual reporting to the relevant service line APP Director and the designated physician leader for administrative purposes. When on clinical duty, the APP Manager will collaborate with the assigned physician.

- Supervision exercised: Administrative supervision is exercised over APPs within the assigned areas.
Minimum Requirements
Physician Assistant Candidate:
- Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
- Satisfactory completion of a physician assistant program accredited by ARC-PA or one of its predecessor agencies.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
- State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required.
- Current DEA registration required.
- BLS required (ACLS may be required depending on delineation of additional privileges not included in core privileges).
- Five years of APP clinical experience in a specialty relevant to the practice area is required.
- Two years of relevant leadership experience is required.
Nurse Practitioner Candidate:
- Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
- Graduate of an accredited nurse practitioner program.
- Current DEA registration required.
- BLS required (ACLS may be required depending on delineation of additional privileges not included in core privileges).
- Five years of APP clinical experience in a specialty relevant to the practice area is required.
- Two years of relevant leadership experience is required.
