Job description

Job Summary

Responsible for managing reporting APPs and APP supervisors, including activities related to patient care, service line development, quality improvement, strategic planning, and policy enforcement. Ensures APP clinical work adheres to scope of practice and hospital protocols. Assesses staffing effectiveness, mentors staff, and manages administrative duties such as hiring, onboarding, performance evaluations, and compliance with OPPE/FPPE. Represents APPs to external review agencies like the Joint Commission and American College of Surgeons.

The position is typically 50% administrative and 50% clinical, based on expertise or as directed by the APP Director or VP of APP Services.

Note: This is a 40-hour position that may include off-shift hours, weekends, and holidays. It provides leadership within a specialty service with potential expansion to other APP teams based on organizational needs.

Essential Functions
  1. Collaborate with leadership to identify clinical growth and process improvements; participate in meetings and committees.
  2. Evaluate APP workforce needs, approve staffing requests, and assist in recruitment and retention efforts.
  3. Ensure financial integrity by reviewing billing practices and monitoring key metrics.
  4. Oversee CE/CME policies and expenses.
  5. Develop peer review and quality metrics; assist with chart reviews and FPPE development.
  6. Manage change within the service line through effective communication.
  7. Develop and oversee clinical training, orientation, and billing/coding education.
  8. Manage APP performance through evaluations, coaching, and disciplinary actions as needed.
  9. Coordinate scheduling and manage unexpected staffing changes.
  10. Clinically work in 50% of the time in the designated area of expertise.
Supervision
  • Dual reporting to the APP Director and physician leader for administrative matters. Collaborate with physicians during clinical duties.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Exercise administrative supervision over APPs in the assigned areas.
Candidate Qualifications

Physician Assistant: Current Michigan license, ARC-PA accredited education, NCCPA certification, Michigan Controlled Substance License, DEA registration, BLS (and ACLS if applicable), 5+ years clinical experience, 2+ years leadership experience.

Nurse Practitioner: Current Michigan licensure, accredited nurse practitioner program, DEA registration, BLS (and ACLS if applicable), 5+ years clinical experience, 2+ years leadership experience.
