Cushing Academy seeks to hire a History/Social Sciences Department Chair and AP Economics teacher to start August 15, 2023.

The Department Chair serves to align the History and Social Sciences Department with the vision and mission of the school and is responsible for promoting a creative, challenging, and supportive learning environment. The Department Chair models and fosters a culture of curiosity, collaboration, feedback, and reflection; advocates for the needs of individual members and the department as a whole; and serves as a liaison for internal and external constituencies.

Responsibilities include teaching three sections of AP Economics and one section of a social studies elective. Additional responsibilities include serving as an advisor and coaching or leading an afternoon activity for two seasons. Housing is provided to go with associated residential life duties. The Department Chair reports to the Director of Academic Affairs and serves on the school’s Academic Committee.

Qualified candidates will hold a master's degree in a related field and will have taught at the high school level for five years. Familiarity with independent high schools is necessary, and boarding school experience is particularly helpful. Successful candidates will have an exceptional ability to develop and maintain positive and healthy relationships with a diverse range of adolescents. Candidates should demonstrate an ongoing commitment to creating and supporting an inclusive educational environment and a willingness to examine their own educational practices through an anti-oppression and anti-racist framework.
