Job summary

Cleveland Animal Protective League in Cleveland, OH is seeking a Humane Agent to serve as a law enforcement representative in animal cruelty prevention and welfare education. The role conducts investigations and assists in promoting humane care in line with the APL’s mission.

Responsibilities include educating the public, following up on notices, maintaining case records, and collaborating with city, county, and neighboring agencies.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Valid Ohio Driver’s License and insurable driving record.
• Two years of humane investigations experience strongly preferred; minimally, three years in animal welfare, law enforcement, or related field.
• Certified euthanasia technician or ability to become certified within six months of hire.
• Post‑hire: complete the 20‑hour state‑mandated training with OPOTA curriculum and pass the humane agent exam.

Responsibilities

• Educates the public on animal care and humane treatment in accordance with laws.
• Conducts investigations and follows up on notices to ensure compliance or issue summons.
• Maintains evidence and court documents for cases requiring prosecution.
• Interfaces with city/county law enforcement and animal control.
• Provides public education and supports department in events and programs.
• Maintains vehicles, equipment, and supplies for humane investigations.
