Animal Friends is seeking a Humane Society Police Officer to investigate cruelty and neglect in Allegheny County and partner with residents, vets and law enforcement to improve outcomes. The role emphasizes education, resource-based intervention, and protecting the animal‑human bond.

HSPOs work 24/7, may require travel, and participate in training while engaging volunteers to support our mission of safer, healthier communities for people and pets.

Qualifications

• Must have law enforcement or legal experience preferred.
• Experience in animal welfare work is preferred.
• Associates or Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or related field is preferred.
• Act 235 certification preferred (may be completed within six months).
• Background checks under PA Act 1994-135 required; can be completed after hire.

Responsabilités

• Investigates reports of animal cruelty and neglect, interviews witnesses, collects evidence, and writes case reports.
• Assists in removal of abandoned or abused animals as dictated by law.
• Handles fractious and/or fearful animals with humane handling tools.
• Writes reports of activities and maintains files of confiscations and dispositions.
• Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information within the department.
• Testifies and provides evidence in court as needed.
• Educates the public and collaborates with law enforcement partners and community groups.
