Job Summary

The Laboratory Animal Resource Center (LARC) supports faculty research programs by providing services related to the care and use of laboratory animals, including purchasing, daily care, and health monitoring of all species. The Animal Technician is responsible for the daily care of animals in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Duties include changing cages and racks, delivering food and water according to established procedures, maintaining equipment and housing areas, and performing record-keeping such as per-diems, animal health surveillance, feed logs, temperature/humidity charts, and animal receipt/disposition logs. LARC cares for various species across multiple facilities in San Francisco.

Position Details

  • Full Time
  • Salary Range: $22.58 - $27.74 per hour
  • Location: San Francisco, CA
  • Work Style: Fully On-Site
  • Shift: Variable, 8 hours, 7:30 am to 4:30 pm

Responsibilities

  1. Perform daily animal care activities, including cage changes, feeding, and monitoring health.
  2. Maintain accurate records of animal care activities and health surveillance.
  3. Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and SOPs.
  4. Assist with technical procedures and report problems promptly.
  5. Support research activities as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; completion of AALAS Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification or equivalent experience.
  • At least one year of animal care experience, or two years if without certification.
  • Ability to work under supervision, follow instructions, and work independently.
  • Basic computer skills, including email and record-keeping.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks such as bending, lifting up to 50 pounds, and wearing PPE.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of laboratory animal feeding, caging, and space requirements.
  • Experience with health concern identification and regulatory compliance.
  • Knowledge of disinfection, sterilization, and use of cage washers/autoclaves.
  • AALAS ALAT certification.
