Job summary

SPCA of Wake County is seeking an Intake Specialist to serve as the primary contact for people and animals entering the shelter. You will coordinate admissions, collect and document information, assist with medical processing, and collaborate with Medical, Animal Care, Behavior, Foster, and other teams to support timely and appropriate care.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum of one year of professional experience in an animal shelter, veterinary practice, or similar setting.
• Strong written and verbal communication and customer service skills.
• Proficiency with computers and cloud-based software.
• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Ability to work with diverse teams and community members.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and meet driving eligibility.

Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate customer service by phone, email, and in person.
• Conduct intake appointments and gather complete behavioral, medical, and historical information.
• Maintain accurate electronic records across organizational systems.
• Educate community members about resources and pet-retention options when appropriate.
• Demonstrate resilience and emotional intelligence while handling sensitive situations with animals and people.
• Prioritize incoming cases, identify urgent concerns, and coordinate next steps.
• Safely handle, restrain, move, and transport animals as needed.
• Operate organization vehicles for transport between facilities and partners.
• Maintain sanitation, safety, and biosecurity across workspaces.
