Job Title: Animal Health Technician

Job Location: Plum Island, NY

Clearance: US Citizenship required as this supports a government agency

Currently, we have an opening for a full-time Animal Health Technician located on Plum Island in Orient, NY. The Animal Health Technician will work in a team of Veterinarians, Animal Health Technicians, and Animal Care Technicians to support research with large animals.

POSITION DUTIES & REQUIREMENTS:

1. Provide Animal Health Technician support to the veterinarians and animal care staff.
2. Under the direction of the veterinarians, conduct animal clinical rounds to ensure compliance with all animal welfare requirements, prescribed treatment plans, and IACUC-approved animal research protocols.
3. Assist animal care staff in collecting tissue samples and administering drugs under the direction of veterinarians.
4. Assist veterinarians and animal care staff with making drug cocktails for use in animal procedures.
5. Don appropriate PPE in biocontainment areas and follow all safety measures for biosecurity.
6. Assist in animal health record keeping.
7. Update daily health reports and notify respective parties.
8. Perform animal intake exams and microchipping.
9. Conduct weekly large animal exams and evaluations.
10. Prepare sampling material for staff.
11. Prepare and administer animal treatments.
12. Prepare, administer, and monitor animal sedation.
13. Coordinate controlled drug substances.
14. Perform parasitology diagnostics.
15. Oversee the animal enrichment program.
16. Manage drug and supply inventory and ordering.
17. Act as a backup subject matter expert for blood collection procedures.
18. Generate forms and write/edit/update Standard Operating Procedures.
19. Complete all assigned training.
20. Assist in training and onboarding new staff members.
21. Participate in and present at staff meetings and trainings.
22. Order and inventory materials and supplies for research studies.
23. Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:

1. AA or BS degree in animal science or related science preferred.
2. Background knowledge of working with research animals.
3. Capable of performing basic animal care duties with guidance.
4. Ability to be trained to achieve AALAS ALAT certification.
5. Effective verbal and written communication skills.
6. Ability to lift and carry feed materials weighing up to 75 pounds and handle items such as feed trays weighing up to 20 pounds.
7. Continuous standing and walking on concrete and/or a slippery floor due to the nature of the work with animals.
8. Must have strength and agility to restrain strong and very active animals weighing approximately 500 pounds or more.
9. Must be able to receive and maintain a Personal Security Level 3 (PSL-3) clearance and participate in the Occupational Health/Safety Programs.
10. Must be able to pass a criminal background check and drug screening.
