Job summary

The Metro Richmond Zoo is seeking skilled trades workers to renovate and maintain more than 30 buildings and 100+ animal habitats across its 150-acre site. This role involves carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, welding, painting, fencing, and other trades to create safe, engaging habitats.

Candidates must be 18+, have a high school diploma, a valid driver's license, and at least 3 years in construction; ability to work outdoors in all weather; and willingness to work 40 hours weekly,

Qualifications

• Be at least 18 years old.
• Have a high school diploma or general education degree.
• Have a valid driver’s license.
• Be authorized to work in the United States.
• Have 3 years of construction experience.
• Be self-motivated in work ethic.
• Able to work outdoors in all weather from 0°F to over 100°F.
• Able to communicate clearly in written and verbal forms.
• Able to handle stressful situations calmly and effectively.
• Able to handle multiple tasks and work independently or in a team.
• Have great attention to detail and reliable transportation.
• Appreciation for animals and their wellbeing.

Responsibilities

• Carry out new project construction on animal exhibits (carpentry, plumbing, electrical, concrete, painting, fencing, etc.).
• Renovate and maintain 30+ zoo buildings and structures.
• Renovate and maintain 100+ animal habitats.
• Dig trenches, compact earth, backfill holes.
• Perform building maintenance such as changing bulbs, door handles, ballasts.
• Maintain all safety standards and equipment fleet (golf carts, UTVs, ATVs, heavy machinery).
• Move, secure, install, build, load, or unload materials.
• Operate heavy and light equipment as needed on site.
