Job summary

Hartford Police Department's Animal Control Division seeks a dedicated officer to impound and care for animals, maintain records, transport to pound or Humane Society, and enforce state statutes and city ordinances. The role includes field surveys, placements, and investigations of stolen dogs, with 40 hours per week under supervision of the Chief of Police.

Applicants must have a high school diploma and two years of animal care experience, with CT certification optional.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from a standard high or vocational school.
  • Two years experience in caring for animals including some experience in animal protection work.
  • If already certified Animal Control Officer in Connecticut, attach copy of certification.
  • A copy of your diploma or transcript must be submitted with your application.
  • If selected, you will be required to pass a physical examination, drug and alcohol screening, and a background check.
  • 3-12 months of probation.

Responsibilities

  • Impounds and cares for unlicensed, roaming, injured, diseased, or dangerous animals.
  • Maintains records of daily activities, complaints, arrests and transactions.
  • Transports impounded animals to the pound or Humane Society.
  • Enforces state statutes and city ordinances regarding animals.
  • Conducts surveys of dogs and reports unlicensed dogs to the Town Clerk.
  • Tries to find homes for suitable unclaimed dogs.
  • Investigates complaints of stolen dogs.
