Job summary

The SPCA of Wake County is seeking an Animal Care Manager to lead the Animal Care Team, shaping daily workflow, scheduling, coaching, and staff development to uphold high standards of animal care and a collaborative work environment.

This role drives animal flow, welfare initiatives, and operational excellence through KPI monitoring, cross-functional collaboration, and data-informed decision making in support of the organization’s mission to save animal lives.

Qualifications

• Minimum two years of supervisory experience, preferably within the animal welfare industry.
• Strong knowledge of companion animal behavior, body language, humane handling techniques, and animal welfare practices.
• Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
• Ability to lead, coach, and develop teammates while promoting a positive work environment.
• Experience using databases, CRM systems, or shelter management systems to maintain records.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and meet driving eligibility requirements.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and improve high standards of animal care, welfare, sanitation, enrichment, and humane handling.
• Identify opportunities to improve animal welfare, flow, and capacity of care.
• Ensure efficient animal flow while supporting quality care and positive outcomes.
• Develop processes reducing length of stay while ensuring a safe environment for animals.
• Lead process improvements to strengthen workflows and operational effectiveness.
• Own and manage departmental KPIs, using data to drive improvements.
• Collaborate with supervisors to ensure leadership, communication, and accountability.
• Manage staffing schedules, payroll, and timekeeping for the Animal Care Team.
• Maintain inventory and coordinate ordering; ensure records in shelter systems.
• Provide cross-functional collaboration to support animal movement, adoption, and outcomes.
