Position Overview

The Operations Leader - Animal Care promotes and ensures the efficient and effective operation of the Companion Animal Department. They drive sales of aquatic pets, reptiles, birds, and small companion animals, coach and mentor Pet Care Center partners, and support the guest experience and animal care. The role involves training, developing, supporting scheduling, and leading a high-performing team to meet sales, gross margin, and animal and merchandise shrink targets. Responsibilities also include managing all aspects of the Pet Care Center’s business in line with Petco standards and safety procedures.

Position Responsibilities
  • Utilize business acumen to analyze trends and implement improvement plans.
  • Ensure the health and well-being of live animals according to Petco standards, policies, and procedures, including health checks and wellness documentation.
  • Adhere to Veterinary Protocols for sick animals.
  • Process transactions to enhance guest experience.
  • Support guest interactions and support the selling model.
  • Implement and execute Companion Animal Operations and Aquatics procedures through training and coaching in areas such as Animal Care, Aquatics, Maintenance, and Regulatory Compliance.
  • Order live animals efficiently to maximize sales, margin, and inventory, analyzing department data for improvements.
  • Maintain operational standards in the department.
  • Complete all animal-related maintenance tasks as outlined.
  • Maintain high presentation standards in aquatics and companion areas.
  • Partner with Merchandising to ensure proper in-stock levels and achieve goals.
  • Handle and document all Adoption Animals properly.
  • Understand and analyze sales and margin reports.
  • Lead, coach, and provide feedback to PCC partners to ensure quality service and task performance.
  • Coordinate partner scheduling to meet in-stock and guest service goals during peak hours.
  • Apply talent management skills in recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, coaching, and succession planning.
  • Provide excellent service to guests, sharing product knowledge and suggesting merchandise using the selling strategy.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Support the implementation of Omni Channel initiatives like BOPUS, Ship-from-store, Curbside, and Endless Aisle.
  • Act as Leader on Duty, supporting center execution, training, communication, and safety.
  • Train and develop partners in collaboration with the sales team.
  • Promote a positive, inclusive, and collaborative leadership culture.
  • Display and champion Petco Leadership Expectations.
Qualifications

  • Proficiency in communication, organization, and computer skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong guest service, analysis, problem-solving, and people development skills.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervise Operations Specialists & Senior Aquatics Specialists.
  • Support quick and courteous guest service.
  • Ensure proper opening and closing procedures.
  • Maintain attendance processes and safety procedures.
Work Environment

This role requires support during key hours, including weekends. Most duties are indoors, with occasional physical tasks such as stocking and carrying merchandise up to 50 pounds. Some travel may be required.

Contacts

This position involves continuous contact with the public, other departments, distribution centers, and external vendors for various operational activities.
