Job summary

Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, NY, is seeking an Assistant Animal Care Manager to supervise the DLAR animal care section and ensure compliance with AAALAC, OLAW, and the Animal Welfare Act. The role requires excellent communication and an understanding of laboratory animal facility operations.

The incumbent will oversee staff training, SOP adherence, and daily care activities across multiple facilities, with duties including ordering supplies and coordinating inspections.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required or four (4) years of full-time experience in an animal-related field may be considered in lieu of degree.
  • Experience working in an animal research facility.
  • Experience caring for major laboratory animal species.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Must have and maintain a valid NYS driver’s license; driving animals and supplies between facilities is required.

Responsibilities

  • Direct supervision of the animal care section in the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR).
  • Oversee staff compliance with DLAR SOPs and policies and ensure proper on-the-job training for all staff.
  • Manage vehicle-related duties, including transporting animals and supplies between facilities.
  • Handle product ordering of animal-related supplies for daily care.
  • Assist in preparing AAALAC program descriptions and documentation for inspections (USDA, IACUC, NYS Public Health).
