Summary
Education and length of practice are considered through a formal pay-setting process to determine the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay). This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval includes an award amount (up to $200,000) and an eligibility period (one to five years).
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the requirements at their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.
Basic Requirements:
- U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, per VA Policy.
- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved medical school.
- Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S.
- Residency Training: Completed residency training approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification. Approved residencies include those by ACGME, AOA, or other recognized programs with at least five years of practice in the U.S.
- Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA residencies are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs), who must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee basis.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Duties
- Perform and supervise perioperative anesthetic care, including preoperative administration, monitoring, and post-anesthesia care, adhering to accreditation standards.
- Manage pain relief, cardiac and respiratory issues, and airway management in emergencies.
- Consult with patients in inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Respond to patient calls, communicate lab/test results, and advise providers via phone or email.
- Participate in program planning, policy development, and quality standards for anesthetic care.
- Maintain documentation in compliance with regulatory agencies, including the EMR and ARK systems.
- Ensure equipment maintenance and safety standards are met.
- Provide patient and family education, including informed consent.
- Participate in performance improvement, disaster preparedness, and administrative activities.
- Staff operating rooms as the sole anesthesia provider as needed.
- Report unsafe conditions and adhere to safety and infection control standards.
- Promote patient and staff satisfaction.
- Participate in the VA's total rewards program, including EDRP, salary, paid time off, retirement, insurance, licensure, CME reimbursement, malpractice coverage, and work schedule.
