Job description

Summary

Education and length of practice are considered through a formal pay-setting process to determine the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay). This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval includes an award amount (up to $200,000) and an eligibility period (one to five years).

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing requirements may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the initial qualification standards are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may be appointed if qualified citizens are unavailable, per VA policy.
  • Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from an approved school.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted medical license in the U.S.
  • Residency training approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification. Residency must be accredited by ACGME, AOA, or deemed equivalent by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.
  • Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA programs who meet other requirements may be appointed as 'Physician Resident Providers' (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and work under supervision.

Duties
  • Provide perioperative anesthetic care, including preoperative, intraoperative, and post-anesthesia care, complying with accreditation standards.
  • Manage pain, cardiac and respiratory problems, airway emergencies.
  • Consult with patients in inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Respond to patient calls, communicate test results, and advise other providers.
  • Participate in program planning, policy development, and quality assurance activities.
  • Maintain documentation as per regulatory standards, including EMR and ARK systems.
  • Ensure equipment safety, health, and infection control standards.
  • Provide patient and family education, including informed consent.
  • Participate in performance improvement and disaster preparedness activities.
  • Staff ORs as the sole anesthesia provider as needed.
  • Contribute to high patient and staff satisfaction.
  • Maintain standards for reprocessing medical equipment.
  • Other administrative and clinical responsibilities as assigned.
