Job summary

NC State University’s CVM Teaching Hospital seeks an Anesthesia Veterinary Assistant to support anesthesia services for small, large and exotic species. You will assist with induction, monitoring, patient care, and daily workflow coordination within a fast-paced teaching environment.

The role requires prior veterinary assistant experience and strong time management. Collaboration with clinicians, students and residents is essential, with a focus on safety and quality care in a teaching hospital

Qualifications

• Previous experience as a veterinary assistant in a clinical teaching hospital setting is preferred.
• Strong time management skills and ability to work in a fast-paced teaching environment.
• Ability to collaborate with clinicians, students, interns and residents.

Responsibilities

• Assist with induction setup, monitoring equipment, and room preparation.
• Transport patients between induction, surgery, diagnostics and recovery areas.
• Maintain supply delivery and cleanliness of anesthesia areas and equipment.
• Record data and assist with monitoring and patient care during anesthesia.
• Provide patient restraint, venipuncture and basic medical treatments as directed.
• Participate in teaching and coaching new staff and students.

The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. The hospital staffs over twenty clinical services with board certified specialists that are nationally and even internationally renowned, ensuring the VH is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. The Anesthesia Department provides anesthetic support to a variety of patients across our campus including small, large and exotic species, offering exposure to an array of cases and advanced medical procedures.

A person in this department must possess a good base knowledge of veterinary medicine, have good time management skills, a strong desire to work in a fast-changing, teaching environment and an ability to collaborate with a varied population of people.

The position interacts with internal specialty services requiring anesthesia support and their respective staff, clinicians and students to provide coordination, departmental structure, and assist with veterinary care for all patients associated with the anesthesia service.

Direct duties include, but are not limited to:

• Assistance with induction station setup, including monitoring equipment and disposable supplies
• Assists with transport of patients to induction room, surgical suites, diagnostic rooms, and recovery locations
• Ongoing supply delivery to all anesthesia team members in various locations through the small and large animal hospitals, including disposable supplies, medications, controlled anesthetic drugs, point of care diagnostic test supplies, & monitoring equipment
• Maintains preparation room through continuous cleaning and organization of stations, pre and post anesthetic events
• Assists with cleaning large animal recovery locations
• Daily supply restocking, ordering and management
• Maintains a clean and working environment following hospital standards, infectious disease and hospital policies, along with OSHA , EHS and radiation safety policies and trainings
• Equipment maintenance including cleaning, inspection, troubleshooting and documentation for anesthesia specific equipment such as ECG monitors, direct and indirect blood pressure monitors, pulse oximeter, capnographs, gas analyzers, anesthesia machines and ventilators

Direct patient care duties include but are not limited to:

• Patient restraint, sample submission, medical treatments including TPR , bladder expression, venipuncture, and patient positioning
• Assists anesthetists with monitoring and the use of IV fluid pumps, syringe pump, ECG , direct and indirect blood pressure, pulse oximeter, capnograph, gas analyzer, temperature and various diagnostic testing
• Assists with CPR and life saving support

The position provides essential patient, departmental and hospital coordination of workflow, information and teaching with duties to include, but are not limited to:

• Records and communicates a variety of data relating to patient care and diagnostic testing and treatments with use of hospital information systems.
• Orientation, teaching, and coaching new staff, students, interns and residents in related policies, procedures, and patient care.
• Monitors, informs and documents information related to antibiotic resistant, infectious and ongoing nosocomial testing related to the anesthesia areas.
