Job summary

Vanguard Laboratory, an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited analytical laboratory in Olympia, WA, seeks an experienced chemist to lead method development, instrument setup, validation, troubleshooting, and expansion of our capabilities. The role focuses on bringing new analytical methods online, aligning client needs with practical lab procedures, and growing our accredited scope.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in chemistry, analytical chemistry, pharmaceutical science, biochemistry, or a closely related field.
  • Significant hands-on analytical laboratory experience beyond academic coursework.
  • Demonstrated experience developing, transferring, optimizing, validating, or verifying analytical methods.
  • Direct experience with HPLC and at least one additional major platform such as LC-MS, GC, or GC-MS.
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot analytical instruments and chromatographic methods using a logical, evidence-based approach.
  • Experience preparing standards, QC samples, extractions, calibration sequences, and instrument methods.
  • Strong understanding of calibration, system suitability, integration, recovery, precision, and method-performance evaluation.
  • Strong technical-writing and laboratory-documentation skills.
  • Ability to interpret instrument manuals, scientific publications, compendial procedures, and regulatory methods.
  • Ability to manage multiple technical projects without losing documentation, traceability, or follow-through.
  • Willingness to work on-site in Olympia, Washington.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, optimize, transfer, and implement analytical methods based on client needs, compendial procedures, regulatory methods, published literature, and instrument capabilities.
  • Lead projects to add new analytes and methods to Vanguard Laboratory’s testing capabilities and accredited scope.
  • Select appropriate analytical techniques, sample preparation, standards, calibration models, quality controls, reporting ranges, and validation approaches.
  • Develop methods for pharmaceutical materials, peptides, research chemicals, dietary supplements, foods, beverages, raw materials, environmental samples, and other client-specific matrices.
  • Establish system suitability, calibration requirements, QC criteria, reporting limits, and routine analytical sequences.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and provide technically supported recommendations when a requested method is not immediately practical.
  • Estimate required standards, columns, consumables, maintenance items, and development resources.
