Position: Languages Teacher – American Sign Language (ASL I and ASL II)
Date: July 1, 2025
Department: Faculty
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Full-time/Part-time: Full-time/Part-time – depending on enrollment
Supervisor: Principal

Provides Work Direction to: N/A
Receives Work Direction from: Principal, President, Substitute Coordinator

Purpose of Position: The primary responsibility of our dedicated American Sign Language (ASL) teacher is to develop students’ proficiency in ASL, fostering an appreciation of Deaf culture, and promoting an inclusive and communicative classroom environment. This person will create engaging lesson plans that align with state and national ASL education standards while incorporating interactive learning experiences.

Ethical Standards: Employees of DeLaSalle High School must conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with and supportive of the mission and purpose of DeLaSalle High School. Representative Responsibilities:

  1. Instruction and Curriculum Development:
    • Teach ASL I and ASL II to high school students, using immersive and interactive teaching methods.
    • Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with national and state standards for World Languages and ASL.
    • Utilize technology and multimedia resources to enhance ASL instruction.
    • Design and administer assessments to evaluate student progress in ASL proficiency.
    • Adapt instruction to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities.
    • Encourage student engagement through interactive discussions, storytelling, role-playing, and real-life communication services.
  2. Classroom and Student Engagement:
    • Foster an inclusive learning environment that respects and integrates Deaf Culture.
    • Promote communication using ASL as the primary mode of instruction in the classroom.
    • Implement classroom management strategies to maintain a positive and respectful learning environment.
    • Encourage student participation in extracurricular ASL activities, such as ASL clubs, field trips, and Deaf Community events.
  3. Collaboration and Professional Development:
    • Work collaboratively with other faculty members, counselors, and administration to support student success.
    • Maintain open communication with parents/guardians regarding student progress.
    • Attend faculty meetings, professional development sessions, and conferences to stay updated on best teaching practices.
    • Advocate for ASL and Deaf culture awareness within the school community.
  4. Professional Collaboration and School Involvement:
    • Engage in ongoing professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in teaching and social studies education.
    • Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and community partners to share ideas and strategies for improving instruction.
    • Participate in faculty meetings and school wide initiatives.
    • Support student organizations such as FBLA, DECA, or investment/finance club.
  5. Assessment and Progress Monitoring:
    • Develop and administer assessments to measure student understanding and growth.
    • Provide constructive feedback and adjust instruction based on student needs.
    • Maintain accurate records of student progress and communicate effectively with parents and guardians.
  6. Administrative Duties:
    • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, assignments, and grades.
    • Prepare progress reports and report cards in accordance with school policies.
    • Ensure compliance with school policies, state regulations, and educational standards.
