Job Responsibilities
Perform various duties related to patient care and treatment as directed by attending providers in an outpatient clinic setting. Provide clerical and clinical support to medical staff in the assigned unit.
Minimum Qualifications
Hired prior to March 3, 2024:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate of a Medical Assistant Program OR graduate of the Med Ed Program OR one year of clinical experience.
- West Virginia state criminal background check, and federal, if applicable, required for DHHR regulated area.
- Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within six (6) months.
Hired on or after March 3, 2024:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate of a Medical Assistant Program OR graduate of the Med Ed Program OR one year of clinical experience.
- West Virginia state criminal background check, and federal, if applicable, required for DHHR regulated area.
- Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Registration or Certification.
Experience
- One-year experience as a Medical Assistant or in patient care.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
The following statements describe the general nature of work performed by individuals in this position. They are not an all-inclusive list of responsibilities and duties. Other duties may be assigned.
- Provide support to medical staff to meet patients' needs and ensure efficient operation of the outpatient unit.
- Assist providers in completing requisitions or forms for patient examination or testing. Ensure test results are available for patient visits. Assist patients and providers during medical office visits.
- Administer prescribed medication under supervision of attending provider.
- Perform qualitative and quantitative tests and examinations of specimens.
- Obtain and document patients' specimens as ordered.
- Document and report test results to medical providers.
- After training and skills testing, perform assigned and/or all ordered POCT tests and maintain quality control testing and logs.
- Schedule additional ancillary testing as needed. Assist providers in completing requisitions or forms for patient examination or testing.
- Act as chaperone during medical examinations.
- Ensure medical records and test results are available for visits, including those from referring physicians. Review medical records for accuracy and completeness.
- Monitor nurse call system and relay information to appropriate staff.
- Provide assistance and information to patients, families, and visitors as instructed by the physician.
- Participate in Quality Assurance Program to ensure quality patient services.
- Generate required patient charge data according to WVU Medicine outpatient procedures.
- Assist in maintaining inventory of supplies and equipment for patient care. Prepare orders and report needs to supervisor. Demonstrate knowledge of equipment use and care.
- Assist with inventory and equipment maintenance on the outpatient unit.
- May schedule and coordinate appointments and diagnostic or therapeutic procedures using computerized systems.
- Assist with patient registration, collect vital information, and enter data into the computer. Obtain necessary charts, fee sheets, signatures, and releases.
- May assist with deposit of money and late-night coverage. Assist with unit correspondence using computer software. Process and mail letters to patients.
Physical Requirements
- Work requires strength and stamina, including lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying materials weighing 40+ lbs.
- Must be able to position and lift patients, and stand or walk 4 to 12 hours per day.
Working Environment
- Work is performed in a normal clinical outpatient environment.
- Position is frequently exposed to biohazards and communicable diseases.
- Must be able to respond quickly to varying demands from providers and patients.
