Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret marine construction drawings, blueprints, work packages, and technical specs.
  • Lay out, fit, align, and assemble aluminum structures including decks, bulkheads, frames, and hull sections.
  • Measure, mark, cut, bevel, and prepare aluminum materials for fabrication and assembly.
  • Set up and install temporary supports, braces, and fixtures to maintain alignment.
  • Verify dimensions, tolerances, and structural integrity using layout tools.
  • Perform tack welding as required for assembly operations.
  • Operate grinders, saws, drills, magnetic drills, and other shipyard tools.
  • Coordinate with welders, supervisors, and QA to ensure proper fit-up.
  • Inspect completed assemblies and correct fit-up discrepancies before final welding.
  • Maintain compliance with shipyard safety policies, OSHA regulations, and environmental requirements.
  • Assist with vessel construction, repair, retrofit, and modernization projects.

The Aluminum Structural Fitter is responsible for fabricating, fitting, assembling, and installing aluminum structural components used in the construction, repair, and modification of marine vessels. The position requires the ability to read and interpret blueprints, work with aluminum materials, and ensure all structural assemblies meet shipyard quality, safety, and production standards.

Job Requirements
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Read and interpret marine construction drawings, blueprints, work packages, and technical specifications.
  • Lay out, fit, align, and assemble aluminum structural components including decks, bulkheads, frames, foundations, platforms, and hull sections.
  • Measure, mark, cut, bevel, and prepare aluminum materials for fabrication and assembly.
  • Set up and install temporary supports, braces, and fixtures to maintain proper alignment during assembly.
  • Verify dimensions, tolerances, and structural integrity using measuring instruments and layout tools.
  • Perform tack welding as qualified and required for assembly operations.
  • Operate fabrication equipment including grinders, saws, drills, magnetic drills, and other shipyard tools.
  • Work closely with welders, supervisors, and quality control personnel to ensure proper fit-up and compliance with project requirements.
  • Inspect completed assemblies and correct fit-up discrepancies before final welding.
  • Maintain compliance with all shipyard safety policies, OSHA regulations, and environmental requirements.
  • Assist with vessel construction, repair, retrofit, and modernization projects as assigned.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and properly care for company tools and equipment.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3 years of aluminum structural fitting experience in a shipyard, marine, or heavy industrial environment preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret shipbuilding drawings and structural blueprints.
  • Knowledge of aluminum fabrication techniques and marine construction practices.
  • Proficient in the use of hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments.
  • Ability to work from sketches, templates, and engineering drawings with minimal supervision.
  • Strong understanding of fit-up tolerances and structural alignment requirements.
  • Ability to pass all required pre-employment testing and shipyard certifications.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, elevated locations, and aboard marine vessels.
  • Must be able to stand, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and work in physically demanding conditions for extended periods.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and industrial environments.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience fitting aluminum structures on commercial, military, offshore, or passenger vessels.
  • Knowledge of ABS, Coast Guard, Navy, or other marine industry standards.
  • Forklift, aerial lift, and rigging certifications.
  • Ability to tack weld aluminum (MIG/TIG) as required.
