Job summary

A leading shipbuilding company in Lockport, LA is seeking a 1st Class Aluminum Shipfitter to lay out and fabricate metal structural parts for vessels. The ideal candidate should have five years of marine experience or four years with the company, possess strong blueprint comprehension, and be accurate in layout and fitting processes. This role involves directing other ship fitters and utilizing power tools. The position will require working in confined spaces and at heights above five feet.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Lay out and fabricate metal structural parts for vessel hulls.
• Determine positions of structural components from blueprints.
• Direct subordinate ship fitters and tack welders.
• Mark reference lines and positions on metal parts.
• Install packing, gaskets, and structural accessories.
• Bend, flange, cut, and shape heavy metal parts.
• Use power tools for shaping and cutting materials.

Job description

Job Title: 1st Class Aluminum Shipfitter

Location: Lockport, LA

Position Overview

A 1st Class Aluminum Shipfitter lays out and fabricates metal structural parts and braces them in position within hull of vessel for welding.

Key Responsibilities

• Determines the position of structural components working from blueprints or templates.
• Provides direction to subordinate ship fitters and tack welders.
• Uses blueprints to lay out position of parts on metal.
• Locates and marks reference lines, such as center, buttock, and frame lines.
• Positions parts in hull of vessel and aligns parts in relation to each other.
• Marks location of holes to be drilled and installs temporary fasteners to hold part in place for welding or riveting.
• Installs packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories and members.
• Tack welds clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding.
• Bends, flanges, cuts, and shapes plates, beams, and other heavy metal parts.
• Uses power tools such as skill saw, jig saw, metabo grinders, etc. for shaping/cutting material.
• Works in confined/enclosed spaces.
• Works/climbs at elevations greater than 5 ft.
• Wears/work a respirator when applicable.

Qualifications

• Five (5) years of marine or four (4) years of continuous company experience preferred.

Skills

• Comprehends blueprints, sketches, and templates.
• Able to enter and move through manholes to reach and work in internally confined spaces.
• Accurate in performing the following processes: layout, cutting, measuring, and fitting.
