Job summary

Avail Staffing is seeking skilled 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Class Shipyard Structural Welders for Norfolk, VA. You will read drawings, prepare metal, and apply SMAW, GMAW and FCAW techniques to build and repair ship structures.

Requirements include 5+ years of shipyard welding, certifications, and the ability to pass a weld test. You will work outdoors in a noisy environment, with emphasis on safety and quality control.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of welding experience in a shipyard environment.
  • Proficiency with SMAW, GMAW and FCAW welding techniques and certifications.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex technical drawings.
  • Experience in cutting and shaping metal components.
  • Endurance for physically demanding tasks and outdoors work.
  • Precise welds ensuring structural integrity and quality.
  • Experience in confined spaces within ship hulls.
  • Ability to work at elevated heights and in noisy environments.
  • OSHA 10 or equivalent safety training may be required.

Responsibilities:
  • Blueprint Interpretation: Read and follow technicaldrawings to determine welding procedures and measurements.
  • Metal Preparation: Cut, grind, and prep metalcomponents for welding.
  • Welding Operations: Utilize SMAW, GMAW, and FCAWtechniques to join metal parts.
  • Quality Control: Inspect welds for defects andensure compliance with quality standards.
  • Fitting & Alignment: Precisely position and aligncomponents for structural integrity.
  • Safety Compliance: Follow all safety regulations,wear protective gear, and handle hazardous materials properly.
  • Confined Space Work: Operate in tight areas withinship hulls using specialized equipment.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Experience:5+ years of welding experience in ashipyard environment to be eligible for 1st Class, all other Classes will be commensurate with experience.
  • Certifications: Proficiency in various welding techniques withrequired certifications.
  • Blueprint Reading: Ability to interpret complextechnical drawings.
  • Metal Fabrication: Competency in cutting andshaping metal.
  • Physical Stamina: Endurance to perform physicallydemanding tasks, including heavy lifting.
  • Attention to Detail: Precision in ensuring weldquality and structural soundness.
  • Shipyard Setting: Outdoor work with exposure toweather and noise.
  • Confined Spaces: Operating in tight quarterswithin the ship's structure.
  • Elevated Heights: Welding in high areas asrequired.
