Primary Responsibilities

The Alaska Maritime Program Leader will provide maritime (market sector) and waterfront infrastructure (business class) practice oversight for the Alaska Area. The position will have a focus on client management and business development with internal duties that include representation of geographic operations and internal- and cross-market sector leadership, program and staff development, staff retention, profitability, morale, quality control, and marketing support. This individual will also serve as a client manager and project manager for future assignments and pursuits with key clients throughout the Area. This individual will be expected to identify and develop project opportunities, serve as a pursuit champion, and act as a resource for HDR pursuits. Duties will also include planning, directing, and monitoring all aspects of large multi-discipline projects or medium-sized projects with a high degree of technical complexity.

Business Development Responsibilities– The position will be responsible for assessing the Area’s marketplace, initiating market development strategies, and determining the best business approach to win and secure contracts. Business development efforts will include cross-sector collaboration with other market sectors and business groups.

Duties will include:

  • Serve as the Client Manager for selected key clients such as Alaska DOT&PF within the area and be active and visible in the industry.
  • Promote the marketing and delivery of all HDR services to clients while working with our technical staff and client managers.
  • Work with Regional Business Group, Market Sector, and Operations Managers on development and delivery of Alaska business development and strategic initiatives, monitor performance metrics and manage resources to ensure capacity and capability to deliver high quality services on time and budget.
  • Support business growth by actively developing client relationships and establishing pursuit and partnering strategies; develop statements of qualifications, technical approaches, and proposals; participate in selection interviews; and negotiate amenable contract terms, fees, and schedules.
  • Participate in industry associations and serve as a company ambassador in business and community organizations.
  • Develop relationships with industry counterparts in other consulting and construction firms.

Staff Development Responsibilities – The position will seek opportunities to enhance our practices so that we will best perform within the marketplace to win and deliver work and will provide opportunities for staff growth and development. And will lead and/or assist with the identification and recruitment of prospective future employees.

Duties will include:

  • Assume responsibility for coordination of area business development and technical staff within the practice and coordinate work-sharing among area offices and supporting disciplines and within the national maritime practice.
  • Work with the Business Class leadership and technical practice groups to drive technical excellence and coordinate technical staff to support the program and marketing efforts.
  • Lead the Area in identifying needs and opportunities for new and improved technical services and products to maximize the depth, effectiveness, and efficiency of the practice.

Support to Operations– Key responsibilities consist of helping to drive client management, monitoring and taking action regarding market sector profit and loss, ensuring project delivery and supporting the QA/QC program.

Duties will include:

  • Project management and/or task leads on maritime-related projects such as dock design/replacement/rehabilitation, float design, seawall design/replacement/rehabilitation, mooring analyses, ancillary port and harbor engineering projects.
  • Monitor market sector performance indicators NFE/NFB/profit/positive equity/AR/losses/investments.
  • Be aware of staff workload and facilitate work sharing; promote effective use of company resources and assist in applying key staff/expertise to projects.
  • Promote Quality Assurance/Quality Control; work with market sector, business class, area, and regional leadership to support local programs with key technical expertise in support of marketing and project activities.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in planning and/or engineering with a majority of that experience within Maritime & Waterfront Infrastructure.
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in an engineering, planning, or a related field.
  • Experienced in development and management of strategic marketing programs for planning and/or engineering services.
  • Experienced in development and management of a wide range of client relationships and specific program and/or project pursuits in the Maritime industry.
  • Experienced in overall staff development to include recruiting, career path advancement and professional growth.
  • Experienced with industry associations and maintains a visible profile in the market sector.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with Area and Regional Operations, Market Sector and Business Group leadership, Area Business Group Managers, Area Marketing Managers and Area Managers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with planning and/or design of maritime structures in Alaska.
  • Successful record in initiating and managing market growth, marketing, and business development.
  • Demonstrated ability in successfully leading teams on complex seaport, private terminal, and coastal resilience projects.
  • The successful candidate must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and, during evaluation, may be requested to provide examples of technical writing.
