Qualifications

Job description

The Airport Operations Technicians are responsible for assisting in the day-to-day operations and maintenance of airport facilities and equipment. This role involves performing a variety of tasks to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the airport, including conducting routine inspections, troubleshooting equipment issues, and coordinating with other airport personnel. The Airport Operations Technician II will work under the guidance of the Airport Operations Supervisor to maintain a safe and secure environment for airport operations.

Essential Job Functions

Under general supervision of the Airport Director, this position performs a variety of specialized work in the operations of the Winter Haven Regional Airport; maintains and ensures the safety of runways, taxiways, and ramps for aircraft operations; conducts aircraft fueling and marshaling; maintains Airport facilities and grounds; conducts training; and performs related duties, as required or directed. As the lead operations technician, you will oversee the work of assigned personnel. Performs daily inspections of all airport operational areas and equipment for compliance with federal, state, local, and airport rules and regulations. Performs both semi-skilled and skilled labor in the maintenance of airport buildings, hangars, pavement, lighting, fencing, as well as other facilities and grounds. Assists during aircraft emergencies, facility equipment failure, airfield lighting failures, building/structure emergencies, pavement failures, hazardous incidents, and related emergencies. Fuels aircrafts utilizing safe practices and procedures. Directs and parks aircrafts on ramps. Provides training to other members of the staff. Assists the public; responds to routine questions or concerns and requests for service; initiates problem resolution. Operates vehicles and equipment to perform work and necessary errands as directed. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • A willingness to learn the principles, practices, methods, materials, and tools used in airport operations; the hazards and safety precautions associated with aircraft operations, high voltage airfield lighting systems, and heavy equipment; and the techniques and procedures of fueling and parking aircraft.
  • Ability to stay alert and aware at all times to prevent injury or accidents; read and interpret diagrams, technical specifications, operational manuals, and regulatory publications; learn job-related material through oral instruction and observation; operate and coordinate daily activities near aircrafts; communicate on two-way radios; utilize computer technology to store/access data and maintain records; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; read and interpret rules, follow instructions, maintain confidentiality of materials, and operate vehicles and related equipment skillfully and safely.
  • Must have strong organizational skills and a solid work ethic.
Minimum Education & Experience
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • Trade certificate and/or Associates Degree preferred.
  • Two years of experience performing mechanical and facility maintenance work preferred.
  • Any combination of training and experience which will indicate the possession of the skills, knowledge, and abilities listed above.
Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license with a good driving record as determined by the City of Winter Haven.
  • Absence of non-prescribed controlled substances in the applicant’s system as verified by a laboratory approved by the City of Winter Haven.
PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
  • Must have the physical ability, strength, and flexibility to perform the job functions in the work environment.

  • The primary duties of this position are performed in an outdoor environment that may involve exposure to adverse weather conditions, aviation and vehicular traffic, and related hazards including electrical voltage, the use of power tools and equipment and hazardous chemicals and materials.
  • Sufficient strength to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to fifty (50) pounds for varying distances.
  • Sufficient body flexibility, mobility, stamina, and balance to perform maintenance and repair operations that require bending, stooping, kneeling, stretching, and other physical exertions.
