Job summary

Aviation Systems Engineering Company is seeking a part-time Aircraft Radar Engineer to support design, integration, testing, and sustainment of airborne radar systems for naval aviation. You will analyze requirements, define interfaces, review documents, and contribute to verification and test activities at NAS Patuxent River, MD.

The role requires TS/SCI with DoD eligibility, collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, and experience in radar, avionics, and RF systems.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or related technical discipline.
• Experience with radar, avionics, mission systems, or similar complex airborne electronic systems.
• Experience with systems engineering: requirements analysis, design reviews, interface management, verification planning.

What You'll Do:

As the part-time Aircraft Radar Engineer, you will support the design, integration, testing, evaluation, and sustainment of airborne radar systems for naval aviation platforms. Performs requirements analysis, interface definition, technical reviews, performance assessment, troubleshooting, and verification activities related to radar and aircraft mission systems.

This position works in tandem with multidisciplinary engineering teams supporting avionics, software, hardware, integration, test, airworthiness, cybersecurity, logistics, and fleet support activities.

Key Responsibilities:

• Support the design, development, integration, test, and sustainment of airborne radar systems and associated avionics.
• Analyze radar system requirements and interfaces and support allocation of requirements to hardware and software components.
• Develop and review engineering documentation, including requirements, interface control documents, design specifications, verification plans, test procedures, and technical assessments.
• Evaluate radar subsystem designs for technical adequacy, integration, maintainability, and compliance with program requirements.
• Support technical reviews, including SRRs, PDRs, CDRs, TRRs, and configuration control boards.
• Assess radar performance, including detection range, resolution, tracking, clutter and environmental effects, waveform behavior, antenna characteristics, signal processing, and EMI/EMC.
• Support integration of radar systems with mission computers, displays, data buses, power, cooling, and other aircraft avionics.
• Support laboratory, ground, and flight test planning and execution; analyze test data and assist with verification, validation, troubleshooting, and discrepancy resolution.
• Investigate technical issues, perform root-cause analysis, and recommend corrective actions.
• Coordinate with government, industry, fleet, and other technical stakeholders to resolve issues and support capability development.
• Support risk management, configuration management, engineering investigations, and sustainment activities.
• Ensure engineering products and activities comply with applicable airworthiness, systems engineering, safety, cybersecurity, spectrum, and program requirements.

Requirements

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
• Experience supporting the design, development, integration, test, or sustainment of radar, avionics, mission systems, or other complex airborne electronic systems.
• Experience with systems engineering activities such as requirements analysis, design reviews, interface management, verification planning, and discrepancy resolution.
• Experience supporting multidisciplinary engineering teams in an acquisition, development, or sustainment environment.
• Experience reviewing technical data, engineering documentation, and test results.
• Knowledge of airborne radar principles, avionics architectures, systems engineering processes, analog and digital electronics, RF systems, and signal processing.
• Ability to analyze technical information, troubleshoot system integration issues, interpret test data, and communicate engineering findings.
• Ability to work independently with limited supervision and contribute to multidisciplinary engineering teams.

The Aircraft Radar Engineer must have working knowledge of several of the following:

• Radar system architecture and subsystem integration
• Radar waveforms and signal processing
• Antenna and RF subsystems
• Receiver, exciter, and transmitter functionality
• Radar interfaces with mission computers and displays
• Avionics data buses and communication protocols
• Embedded system integration
• Verification and validation
• Test planning and test data analysis
• EMI/EMC and environmental integration
• Reliability, maintainability, and supportability
• Root-cause and corrective-action methodologies

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with maritime surveillance radar, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR), moving target indication (MTI), or other multimode radar applications.
• Experience supporting Navy or DoD aviation systems, avionics modernization, or mission systems integration.
• Experience with developmental or operational test, systems integration laboratories, or flight test.
• Experience with requirements management tools such as DOORS or equivalent.
• Experience with model-based systems engineering, digital engineering, configuration management, or technical baseline management.
• Experience with failure analysis, reliability, maintainability, and supportability of fielded aviation systems.
