The Aircraft Mechanic III – Egress serves as the technical subject matter expert (SME) for organizational-level (O-Level) maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of F/A-18 egress systems assigned to Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base (NAS JRB) Fort Worth, Texas

In this senior leadership role, you will perform and oversee critical maintenance on ejection seats, escape systems, canopy jettison subsystems, and all associated explosive or ballistic devices. You are responsible for ensuring that all egress workflows strictly conform to NAVAIR instructions, explosive safety requirements, and Quality Assurance metrics while mentoring junior technicians.

Responsibilities

Egress Systems Maintenance & Explosive Safety

• Perform, inspect, and operationally test aircraft egress systems, including ejection seats, canopy sequencing, escape hatches, initiators, and ballistic components.
• Safely arm, de-arm, configure, and restore aircraft egress systems adhering to exact explosive safety guidelines and technical instructions.
• Diagnose complex electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic discrepancies within the escape system utilizing voltmeters, leak detectors, and specialized circuitry analyzers.
• Conduct rigid removal, replacement, rigging, and structural adjustments of ejection components following scheduled or unscheduled maintenance actions.

Technical Leadership & Inspections

• Lead, coordinate, and supervise daily egress tasks across multiple F/A-18 variants to satisfy the squadron's production schedule.
• Provide targeted technical guidance, safety oversight, and hands‑on mentorship to lower-level mechanics.
• Interpret complex blueprints, structural engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, Maintenance Instruction Manuals (MIMs), and Technical Directives.
• Complete mandatory military logbook logging, discrepancy documentation, and maintenance action sheets with total precision.
• Cross‑train and support maintenance on general airframes, mechanical flight controls, or fuel structures when secondary tasks are required to get aircraft safe‑for‑flight.
• Coordinate shift turn‑overs and aircraft availability directly with Quality Assurance, Production Control, and government representatives.
• Enforce flawless workplace compliance regarding Foreign Object Damage (FOD) mitigation, the Tool Control Program (TCP), and OSHA regulations.

Qualifications

• Minimum of eight (8) years of tactical aircraft maintenance experience, with a heavy emphasis on F/A-18 egress systems.
• Current or previous qualification as an F/A-18 Collateral Duty Inspector (CDI) or Quality Assurance Safety Observer (QASO). Formal military school training in aircraft egress/escape systems is highly required.
• Documented familiarity and success managing military explosive safety standards, weapon/explosive certifications, and egress de‑arming mechanics.
• Must possess an active Department of Defense (DoD) Secret Security Clearance or satisfy requirements to obtain installation access instantly.
• High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior U.S. Navy or U.S. Marine Corps fleet experience maintaining F/A-18A-D or F/A-18E/F aircraft at the O-Level.
• Valid Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) Certificate.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to safely handle, lift, or position heavy egress components up to 50 pounds.
• Stamina to stand, kneel, bend, crawl, and perform overhead mechanical rigging inside tight cockpits or confined workspaces.
• Comfort working outdoors on open‑air flight lines under extreme North Texas weather and noisy operating environments.
