Job summary

MONTANA.GOV's Department of Environmental Quality seeks a Section Supervisor for the Permitting Services Section in Helena. You will lead a team responsible for air quality permits and environmental reviews under state and federal standards.

The role requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field, plus several years of environmental field experience and proven leadership ability. Telework eligibility is noted; full-time on-site presence in Helena is typical.

Qualifications

• Minimum requirements include a bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental science, life science, chemistry, physics, or a related degree in natural resources science and three or more years of progressively responsible experience in an environmental field.
• Demonstrated experience in successfully leading people is required, although this may be from roles other than formal supervisory experience.
• Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Responsibilities

• Lead the Permitting Services Section staff in the preparation and issuance of air quality permits and related environmental reviews.
• Oversee day-to-day operations, set priorities, and align section work plans with DEQ strategic goals.
• Communicate priorities clearly, provide timely feedback, and mentor staff to support professional growth.
