Job summary

DHL Global Forwarding in Sterling, VA seeks an Air Freight Export Specialist to own outbound shipments end to end, from booking through departure to handover at destination. You will be the main point of contact for customers, carriers and overseas stations.

Responsibilities include booking capacity, preparing export docs in CargoWise, handling dangerous goods, coordinating daily with warehouse and partners, and ensuring billing and KPI compliance.

Job Title: Air Freight Export Specialist
Job Location: Sterling, VA

Role summary: Owns IAD outbound air export shipments end to end, from booking through departure and handover to destination, as the main point of contact for customers, carriers and overseas stations.

Key responsibilities

• Book airline capacity and plan routings that meet customer service levels and cost targets.
• Prepare and validate export documentation in CargoWise (AWB, manifest, Certificate of Origin, ITAR/EAR controls) and file AES accurately and on time.
• Handle dangerous goods, temperature-controlled and aerospace/defense shipments in line with IATA DGR and customer SOPs.
• Coordinate daily with the warehouse, GSC Bogotá, carriers and destination stations to keep shipments moving and exceptions resolved.
• Ensure job costing and billing are complete before closure to protect GP and keep credit notes to a minimum.
• Meet daily checklist and KPI standards, and comply with TSA IACSSP requirements.
• Support onboarding of new customer lanes and implementations.

Requirements

• Airfreight forwarding, with export experience preferred
• Bachelors Degree preferred
• CargoWise experience preferred; IATA DGR certification preferred or willingness to obtain it.
• Working knowledge of AES and US export controls.
• Strong written communication, attention to detail and follow-up.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
• Legally authorized to work in the US.

Pay Range: $22.29 - $29.73/hr. (Based on Experience)
