Primary Purpose
Assist in the implementation of student Intervention Educational Planning by supporting classroom instruction and activities for students with learning disabilities.
Qualifications
Ability to meet No Child Left Behind requirements: Associate’s Degree, 48 semester hours, or Academic Assessment; High School Diploma or GED; some experience working with young children; temperament to work with handicapped children; ability to maintain effective working relationships with teacher(s), students and administrators; alternatives may be considered by the Board.
Education/Certification

- Ability to meet No Child Left Behind requirements.
Special Knowledge Skills
Basic computer skills; familiarity with audio-visual equipment.
Experience
Some experience working with children with learning disabilities.
Major Responsibilities
- Assist in implementing the student intervention educational plan.
- Develop creative activities to supplement and reinforce learning.
- Familiar with and maintain classroom materials and supplies.
- Assist the teacher in storing materials properly.
- Be punctual and conduct group activities.
- Assist in constructing teaching aides and materials.
- Operate audio-visual equipment.
- Grade or assist in grading papers and recording scores.
- Maintain orderly records.
- Remain optimistic, cheerful, and supportive when working with students.
- Exercise firm but kind control of student behavior, abiding by the teacher’s policy.
- Assist with feeding/positioning of students when necessary.
- Help decorate the classroom.
- Assist in escorting students to and from the bus.
- Perform duties assigned by the principal.
- Make home visits with the teacher.
- Support classroom control with courtesy and good manners.
- Accept the teacher as authority in the classroom.
- Be subject to transfer, reassignment, split-teacher assignment, and bus monitor assignment as needed.
- Dress appropriately and ask for clarification of policies as necessary.
- Use basic computer skills; refer questions about the program to the teacher.
- Maintain confidentiality of students’ testing, diagnosis status, and personal problems.
- Assist with toileting needs, including diapering when necessary.
- Attend required district hours of staff development.
- Professional dress is required.
- Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the campus principal.
Working Conditions
Mental and physical demands include maintaining emotional control under stress, frequent district-wide and statewide travel, occasional prolonged or irregular hours.
