Job summary

MITRE’s Mission Computing Division seeks an AI Solutions Architect Intern currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree. You will work with a mentor and senior staff to help mission teams use approved AI tools, data workflows, and development environments, contributing to a scoped project through experimentation, implementation, testing, and documentation.

You'll learn usable, secure, and responsible AI solutions, follow established practices, and document progress as you complete a defined project

Qualifications

• Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in computer science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, software engineering, systems engineering, or related field.
• Must remain enrolled the semester after the internship.
• Must be eligible to obtain a Secret U.S. Government security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required for clearance.
• Basic programming knowledge demonstrated through coursework or projects; ability to read, write, and test a small program in Python or another language.
• Interest in applied AI and learning how AI tools, APIs, software, and data can support practical user needs.
• Ability to follow written instructions, analyze tasks, document attempts, and seek guidance when unclear.
• Ability to work collaboratively, communicate progress, and take responsibility with mentor support.
• Ability to commit to a minimum on-site presence of 3 days per week.

Responsibilities

• Participate in discussions with technical and mission users with a mentor; document workflow needs and project objectives.
• Build or adapt prototype components, scripts, or API integrations under the direction of senior staff.
• Follow security, data-handling, and responsible-AI practices; use approved tools and data responsibly.
• Run tests and experiments, compare results with mentor criteria, document outcomes and limitations.
• Contribute to starter kits, setup instructions, and project documentation for team reuse.
• Assist with demonstrations, tutorials, and routine user-support tasks; capture questions for the team.
• Work with a mentor to set learning goals and present outcomes at internship end.
