Job summary

Virginia Commonwealth University’s Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center is seeking an AI Research Scientist to advance AI across cancer research, combining bioinformatics, software engineering, and full-stack development to deploy ML/DL/LLMs for cancer-focused applications.

You will collaborate with investigators, deploy on HPC and cloud, and help build scalable AI workflows, training pipelines, and reproducible tools for multi-omics, digital pathology, and precision oncology.

Qualifications

• PhD or equivalent in bioinformatics, computer science, or related field; strong research background.
• 2+ years of machine learning and deep learning experience required.
• Experience with large language models, prompt design, and model deployment.

Responsibilities

• Develop, evaluate, and deploy ML/DL approaches for cancer omics, single-cell, spatial omics, and imaging data.
• Fine-tune and deploy LLMs and foundation models for cancer research applications.
• Build AI agents and language model-based systems to support research workflows and decision-making.
• Create full-stack applications integrating AI models, bioinformatics workflows, databases, and visualization tools.
• Deploy and optimize AI models on HPC clusters and cloud platforms; design scalable pipelines.
• Consult with investigators on study design, analytical strategy, and data interpretation.
• Collaborate on multi-omics, tumor microenvironment, digital pathology, and precision oncology projects.
• Develop/reproducible AI/bioinformatics workflows for shared resources.
• Assess model accuracy, robustness, and efficiency; ensure reproducibility.
• Provide training to staff and investigators on AI-enabled analyses.
• Contribute to manuscripts, grant proposals, and software dissemination.
