Job summary

The Nuclear Company is launching a 12‑week Data Science & Machine Learning Fellowship in Washington, DC. You will formulate problems, build models, and evaluate them with nuclear industry experts to enable fleet‑scale planning and secure operations.

This on‑site fellowship requires MS/PhD candidates in quantitative fields, strong Python/PyTorch skills, and experience in RL, optimization, or forecasting. Housing and relocation are provided for fellows outside the DC area.

Qualifications

• Pursuing MS or PhD in CS/ML/OR or related quantitative field, with expected graduation December 2027 or later.
• Production‑quality Python and PyTorch with solid ML fundamentals.
• Hands‑on experience with RL, optimization, simulation and modeling, or time‑series forecasting.
• Ability to translate a messy real‑world process into a tractable formulation (MDP or optimization model).
• Experience designing, implementing, and evaluating experiments with reproducible research practices.
• Willing and able to work on‑site in Washington DC, five days a week, for the full 12‑week program.
• Access to information and technology subject to U.S. export controls; U.S. Person status required; no visa sponsorship.
• Domain exposure: construction, energy, or critical‑infrastructure security is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Formulate problems from operational processes into well‑defined modeling tasks.
• Build environments for training and evaluating models.
• Develop RL, optimization, or forecasting models for scheduling and capital allocation.
• Design rigorous experiments and keep reproducible codebases.
• Collaborate with engineering on model deployment, monitoring, and safe overrides in production.
