Job summary

The Standard Insurance Company is seeking an AI Product Owner to join our AI & Automation team in Portland. You will turn a prioritized product vision into working software, owning the backlog, sprint, release, and production health of Applied AI products that transform core operations.

You will partner with the AI Product Manager to translate strategy into actionable plans, elicit requirements from engineers and data scientists, and lead Scrum ceremonies, PI planning, and release coordination

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional technology and business analysis experience.
• Experience with cloud-based software, AI/ML concepts, and generative AI systems is preferred.
• Ability to translate technical, data science, and business perspectives for non-technical audiences.
• Experience in underwriting or claims is a plus.
• Proficiency in SDLC and Agile/Scrum required.

Job Summary

The Standard Insurance Company is seeking a skilled and driven AI Product Owner to join our AI & Automation department. In this role, you turn a prioritized product vision into working software. You own the backlog, the sprint, the release and the production health of Applied AI products designed to transform our core operations.

As an AI Product Owner, you will partner with our AI Product Manager, who sets product strategy and the roadmap. Your job is to answer the next question: how do we build it, and who needs to help us? You will translate strategic direction into actionable work plans and user stories. You will elicit detailed implementation requirements from engineers, data scientists, and business partners, and you will lead the scrum ceremonies that keep your pod aligned. You will guide your team through PI planning by defining work packages and their sequence, then set interim sprint goals and drive the team to thorough completion. You will also own release coordination and communication, monitor production system health against uptime expectations, assist with testing and coordinate with dependent teams during each sprint so implementation meets their expectations. A strong understanding of the SDLC and Agile/Scrum methodologies is essential.

Your understanding of AI concepts will be valuable, because these solutions integrate machine learning, deep learning, generative AI, optimization, robotic process automation, computer vision, and logical rule sets on a modern AI/ML DevOps infrastructure. Direct AI development experience is an advantage given the complexity of our AI product release cycles. When a written story is the slower path, you will communicate intent through a coded prototype or a pull request.

As AI compresses delivery timeframes from months to days, demand for work-ready items will grow quickly. You will apply AI tooling to your own work, from requirements capture through story generation and test coverage, to help the team keep pace.

Skills and Background You'll Need

EDUCATION: A high school diploma or GED is required. A Bachelor's degree is preferred.

EXPERIENCE: 5+ years of professional technology and business analysis experience, with prior experience in team-oriented roles that require collaboration with others. An understanding of high-level requirements for cloud-based software applications, traditional AI/ML modeling techniques, and generative AI systems is preferred.

Agile/Scrum experience is required, including hands-on ownership of a backlog, a sprint cadence, and a release process. An understanding of the SDLC is preferred. Proven success delivering forward-leaning technical products that combine AI methods and tools, such as ML, DL, optimization, RPA, OCR, generative AI, and classification, is highly preferred. AI development experience on an enterprise-level product is preferred, as is the technical fluency to read a pull request, build a prototype, and hold a credible design conversation with engineers. Experience supporting production software, including incident response and uptime monitoring, is preferred. Experience working in underwriting or claims is preferred, as is experience in the financial or insurance industry. The ability to translate technical, data science, and business perspectives for a non-technical audience is required, as is the ability to coordinate work across teams you do not manage. You communicate release plans, timing and progress clearly to stakeholders, IT leaders, and internal teams. Top candidates document thoroughly, listen diligently, and turn complex feedback into clear implementation direction. Proficiency in Jira, Miro, Databricks, Microsoft Excel, and PowerPoint is preferred. Experience working with a global capability center or an equivalent off-shore organization is preferred. Experience with dual-track discovery delivery method is preferred.
