Asana is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead the AI Platform organization. You will guide four teams through engineering managers, shaping strategy, execution, and architecture to deliver reliable, high-value enterprise AI capabilities.

Based in San Francisco with a hybrid schedule, you will mentor managers across SF and NYC, drive cost-aware infrastructure, and partner with product, GTM, and finance to tie platform investments to business outcomes.

Qualifications

• 12+ years of software engineering with 5+ years in leadership.
• 2+ years managing engineering managers.
• Experience building organizations, hiring and developing managers.
• Experience with AI tools daily, serving architectures, inference providers, and evaluation systems.
• Ability to optimize infrastructure costs and unit economics at scale.
• Platform mindset with data-driven priorities.
• Skilled asynchronous communicator across time zones.

Responsibilities

• Drive multi-year vision and technical strategy for Asana’s AI platform.
• Own cost-per-execution metrics and optimize inference, routing, and prompt efficiency.
• Establish evaluation frameworks and performance standards for product teams.
• Lead and mentor managers across San Francisco and New York City.
• Evaluate frontier vs open-weight models and manage provider relationships.
• Architectural leadership and build-vs-buy decisions with data.
• Partner with product, GTM, and finance to tie investments to business performance.
