Job summary

OpenAI’s Hardware organization builds AI-native silicon and optimized hardware for AI workloads. This Product Reliability Engineer role owns reliability from PCBAs to integrated racks, partnering with electrical, mechanical, thermal, and manufacturing teams in San Francisco with a hybrid work model.

You will define reliability requirements, lead DFMEA, and drive qualification plans, testing, and field data analysis to improve durability and availability of AI supercomputing hardware.

Qualifications

• Hands-on reliability engineering experience with AI/HPC hardware such as servers, networking, or storage.
• Designed and executed hardware reliability tests and translated results into design improvements.
• Understanding failure mechanisms in electronic assemblies and thermal/mechanical degradation.
• Led reliability qualification through development and production milestones; coordinated DFMEA.
• Able to analyze life-test data using Weibull and other models with statistical tools.

Responsibilities

• Define reliability requirements for PCBAs, trays, systems, and racks.
• Lead DFMEA reviews with electrical, mechanical, and thermal engineers; prioritize risks and recommend design improvements.
• Own reliability qualification plans from NPI through production; define test coverage and exit criteria.
• Develop and execute accelerated life and environmental tests (temperature cycling, humidity, power cycling, shock, vibration).
• Analyze life-test and field data; estimate failure rates and reliability against targets.
• Lead failure investigations and corrective actions; maintain reports and verify fixes.
• Review supplier reliability plans for PCBs and assemblies; identify gaps in stress tests.
• Work with labs to develop fixtures and test methods; review data and keep traceability.
• Coordinate reliability tests, schedules, and resources across programs with teams and suppliers.
• Present results at design and release reviews; identify gaps and actions.
