Job summary

Alignment Research Center seeks an experienced software engineer to serve as automation lead, shaping strategy and execution for automating ARC's research activities using AI. Berkeley-based with relocation support.

The role emphasizes building scalable infrastructure, setting up testing scaffolds, benchmarking LLMs, and solving problems with AI in mathematical contexts. In-person work 5 days a week; visa sponsorship available.

Qualifications

• Engineering/infrastructure experience: ability to set up robust, maintainable systems.
• Initiative and focus: take ownership and manage projects effectively.
• Communication skills: frequent interaction with researchers to set priorities.
• Some mathematical background: understand problem statements and AI-assisted solutions.

Responsibilities

• Building scaffolds: create systems leveraging test-time compute for complex problems.
• Setting up infrastructure: provide robust internal tools and user interfaces.
• Benchmarking: systematically evaluate LLMs and scaffolds with a scientific approach.
• Solving problems: contribute to AI-driven solutions and code for optimization.
