Job summary

Subcritical Systems seeks a core contributor for our five-person engineering team in Austin to advance the CAD automation platform that generates and validates 3D assemblies. You’ll integrate frontier AI models, work on geometry and data modeling, and own major parts of the ATLAS stack end-to-end.

You will collaborate with mechanical designers and nuclear engineers to translate constraints into software, build scalable pipelines, and push-button design iteration that speeds construction

Qualifications

• Strong software engineering fundamentals: Python and/or TypeScript, clean architecture, version control, testing.
• Hands-on experience integrating frontier AI models into production workflows: model APIs, agentic systems, retrieval/context management, evals, observability.
• Experience building tools used by domain experts (engineers, scientists, designers).
• Comfort with geometry, spatial data, or engineering file formats (CAD, STEP, mesh, simulation outputs).
• Track record of shipping in resource-constrained environments (startup, early-stage team, or solo ownership).
• Excellent communication with non-software collaborators; able to translate constraints to engineers.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain our in-house CAD automation pipeline generating parametric 3D assemblies from structured design inputs.
• Build interfaces between the design toolchain and engineering formats (STEP, IGES) for handoff to fabrication partners.
• Automate physics simulation workflows: setup, queue, parse outputs, and feed results into design iteration.
• Own core pieces of ATLAS: orchestration, agent delegation, retrieval over corpora, and tool gateways.
• Build design task management layer linking tasks to the master construction schedule with two-way sync.
• Contribute to internal tooling: VCS for design artifacts, automated validation, and documentation generation.
• Collaborate daily with mechanical designers and nuclear engineers to translate constraints into software.
