Job summary

carbonhouse, inc. is seeking a Backend-focused Software Engineer to build scalable APIs and data pipelines powering AI-driven features. The role is located in Charlotte, NC with a hybrid schedule (onsite 3 days/week) and a salary range of $92,000–$115,000.

You will design, implement and optimize backend services, integrate AI capabilities, and collaborate with product and design to deploy AI-powered features in production. Prior experience with cloud platforms and AI tools is valued.

Qualifications

• Experience building and maintaining backend systems and APIs.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP or Azure).
• Experience with databases (SQL and/or NoSQL).
• Understanding of software design principles and system architecture.
• Familiarity with integrating AI APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic).

Responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain scalable backend systems and APIs.
• Integrate AI/ML capabilities into applications — LLMs, embeddings and vector search.
• Develop and optimize data pipelines for AI workflows.
• Implement retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and context-aware systems.
• Evaluate and integrate third-party AI tools and services.
• Improve system performance, reliability and cost efficiency.
• Write clean, well-tested code and collaborate cross-functionally to ship AI-powered features.
• Contribute to architecture decisions and technical direction.
