Job summary

LangChain is seeking an experienced research engineer to enhance the LangSmith Engine for proactive agent engineering. You will study failures, build benchmarks, run experiments, and push ideas into production to improve agent quality and efficiency.

We expect 4+ years in ML/AI research, a Master’s/PhD, and hands-on work with LLMs and AI agents. You’ll work alongside production engineers on cost, latency, reliability, and scalability in real-world environments.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of ML/AI research experience in industry or academia.
• Master’s or Ph.D. in a relevant field.
• Hands-on with LLMs and AI agents and improving real-world performance.
• Strong track record designing benchmarks, evaluations, and experiments.
• Strong software engineering with production impact.
• Clear communicator with high judgement and initiative.

Responsibilities

• Build benchmarks and evaluations that measure the quality and efficiency of Engine agents on real-world tasks.
• Design and run experiments to improve agent performance across models, prompting, context, tools, orchestration, and agent strategies.
• Explore and implement post-training and fine-tuning techniques when they can meaningfully improve agent capabilities, quality, or cost.
• Turn successful experiments into production improvements, working closely with engineers and researchers to measure impact and prevent regressions.
• Help define the ML roadmap and technical direction for improving Engine agents, and mentor other engineers through strong technical leadership.
