Job summary

Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA, is seeking an Agricultural Technician to support AREC operations. You will operate a tractor, planter/no-till drill, and various farm implements, perform haying and crop harvesting, and assist with cattle care and facilities maintenance.

Applicants should have experience with livestock or crops, operate agricultural equipment, lift 75 pounds, communicate clearly, and work well in a team; overtime eligibility applies for non-exempt staff.

Job Description

Under the direction of the Superintendent and/or Farm Manager the Agricultural Technician will be responsible for operating a tractor, planter/no-till drill, chainsaws and various farm implements. Making hay, harvesting crops, minor facilities maintenance and fence repair. Experience working with cattle, calving, breeding and moving cattle. Perform other tasks as assigned for the overall operation of the AREC policies pertaining to the general maintenance of all vehicles, equipment and implements and informs the Superintendent and/or Farm Manager of problems that arise. Virginia Tech is unable to sponsor work visas for this position.

Required Qualifications

• Experience with livestock and/or crop production.
• Experience in operating agricultural equipment and vehicles.
• Experience or ability to perform heavy manual labor and lift 75 pounds or more.
• Strong communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of pasture maintenance and management.
• Experience with precision ag technology.
