National Experienced Workforce Solutions (NEW Solutions) seeks an Agricultural Science Advisor to support USDA ARS through the Experienced Worker Program. This onsite, part-time role is based in Sidney, MT, offering $50.00 per hour for 20 hours per week.

  • Advise ARS staff regarding crop production operations for mission-critical research.

NEW Solutions connects experienced workers (ages 55+) with the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS). These experienced professionals provide administrative, scientific, and technical support to the Agricultural Research Service through the Experienced Worker Program (EWP).

Positions listed here do not guarantee employment for any definite period. Enrollment in the Experienced Worker Programs administered by NEW Solutions is temporary. The enrollment relationship between NEW Solutions and the Enrollee is an ?at-will? relationship. This means that an Enrollee is free to terminate enrollment at any time during the enrollment period, and NEW Solutions and the Agency have the right to terminate the relationship with the Enrollee.

PLEASE NOTE: An ?Enrollee? is not a federal employee, nor an employee of NEW Solutions. An ?Enrollee? is a participant in a grant program established through a Cooperative Agreement funded by the agency and administered by NEW Solutions. The enrollee shall not sign federal documents, authorize the use of federal funds, nor initiate or conduct federally funded research projects. The enrollee shall not author articles for publication as a federal employee, nor coordinate scientific research between the Government and private industry. The enrollee shall not present themselves as a Government employee or Government representative at meetings both foreign and domestic or when coordinating federal agencies? areas of research. The enrollee shall not make decisions on federally based research on behalf of Government policy makers, and the enrollee shall not supervise any Government employees.

Qualifications

Minimum of 1 year(s) of experience in general agriculture. OR BA/BS Degree in agriculture, electronics, GIS

  • experience with GIS and UAV systems; skilled at computer automated design software and 3D printing; knowledge of crop production practices; experience with electronic datalogging and communications equipment.
  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, ArcGIS
  • GIS, CAD and UAV operation and image processing software
Duties

The enrollee will assist permanent USDA-ARS personnel in the execution of field, greenhouse and laboratory experiments designed to evaluate crop production practices and cropping systems. Both indoor and outdoor tasks will be required.The enrollee shall not sign federal documents, authorize the use of federal funds, nor initiate or conduct federally funded research projects. The enrollee shall not author articles for publication as a federal employee, nor coordinate scientific research between the Government and private industry. The enrollee shall not present themselves as a Government employee or Government representative at meetings both foreign and domestic or when coordinating federal agencies? areas of research. The enrollee shall not make decisions on federally based research on behalf of Government policy makers, and the enrollee shall not supervise any Government employees.

  • Train and assist ARS employees in the operation of UAV-based remote sensing including flight planning, flight execution and post processing of aerial images and remote sensing data.20%
  • Mentor and support ARS employees on use of CAD software, basic shop tools and 3D printing to design, construct and modify research tools and equipment.20%
  • Assist with data management for cropping systems studies.20%
  • Train ARS employees on operation and data collection procedures for two weighing lysimeters and associated data logging and transfer devices.20%
  • Advise and mentor ARS employees regarding crop production operations required for the implementation of mission-critical cropping systems studies.20%

  • Training will be provided as necessary by the agency.
  • Health and Safety Considerations: Initial and refresher training with be provided by the location staff on:-recognizing symptoms of heat-related illnesses and how to treat them-safely operating equipment-proper handling of and hazards associated with chemicals-understanding and minimizing risk of exposure to pesticide residues in the field as per the EPA Worker Protection Standard
