Job summary

The YMCA of Greater New York is hiring a Group Leader for the Afterschool program at the Long Island City YMCA in Queens. This part-time role provides a safe, engaging environment with activities that support learning and growth after school.

Ideal candidates have a High School Diploma (college credits preferred) and at least two years’ experience with children, plus CPR/First Aid certification preferred. Compensation is $17.17 per hour and shifts run weekdays after school.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required. College credits preferred.
• Minimum of two years experience working with children under 13 in a group setting.
• Knowledge of ages and stages of youth development.
• Current Pediatrics CPR or First Aid certification preferred.
• General knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Strong interpersonal skills, leadership qualities, and communicating with diverse youth and adults.
• Y Afterschool programs operate Monday through Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and during school breaks.

Responsibilities

• Ensure health, safety, and well-being of participants with supervision at all times.
• Collaborate with content/activities specialists to implement age-appropriate lessons.
• Provide academic support; homework help; enrichment activities.
• Create meaningful activities and lessons across SEL, fitness, STEAM, literacy, life skills.
• Prepare learning environment and supplies for activities.
• Support culminating performance and interactions with families.
• Coordinate with Inclusion Coordinator to support all students.
• Work with program and school staff.
• Promote inclusive, welcoming environment for diverse participants.
• Serve as positive role model for participants.
• Maintain program documentation (sign-in/out, behavior, incidents).
• Communicate YMCA core values and program goals to participants and caregivers.
• Develop and maintain positive relationships with parents/guardians.
