Job summary

Lowell School in Washington, DC, seeks an After Care and Summer Program Coordinator for a 12-month, full-time exempt leadership role. This position oversees daily operations, staffing, logistics, and quality assurance of extended-day programs from preschool through 8th grade, reporting to the Director of Auxiliary Programs.

The role emphasizes student agency, inquiry-based learning, and strong family communication, with a focus on safety and efficient program delivery year-round.

Qualifications

• Minimum three to five years of experience leading youth programs, after-school care, or summer camps.
• Bachelor's degree in education, youth development, recreation management, or related field; master's degree is a plus.
• Current certification in First Aid, CPR, and AED or willingness to complete within 30 days of hire.
• Working knowledge of progressive education practices (experiential learning, student agency).
• Familiarity with DC childcare licensing requirements.

Responsibilities

• Program Operations: Manage end-to-end daily operations for before care, after care, and summer programs, including check-in/check-out, snack, homework support, and activity rotations.
• Summer and Break Camps: Serve as full-time on-site coordinator for summer programming and coverage programs during breaks and PD days.
• Staff Leadership: Assign daily staff, train and mentor after-care assistants and enrichment instructors to maintain supervision ratios.
• Student Care and Safety: Foster an inclusive, engaging community using Responsive Classroom and social-emotional learning.
• Family Communication: Act as primary day-to-day operational contact for parents during program hours.
