Qualifications

  • Minimum three to five years of experience leading youth programs, after-school care, or summer camps.
  • Bachelor's degree in education, youth development, recreation management, or related field; master's degree is a plus.
  • Current certification in First Aid, CPR, and AED or willingness to complete within 30 days of hire.
  • Working knowledge of progressive education practices (experiential learning, student agency).
  • Familiarity with DC childcare licensing requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Program Operations: Manage end-to-end daily operations for before care, after care, and summer programs, including check-in/check-out, snack, homework support, and activity rotations.
  • Summer and Break Camps: Serve as full-time on-site coordinator for summer programming and coverage programs during breaks and PD days.
  • Staff Leadership: Assign daily staff, train and mentor after-care assistants and enrichment instructors to maintain supervision ratios.
  • Student Care and Safety: Foster an inclusive, engaging community using Responsive Classroom and social-emotional learning.
  • Family Communication: Act as primary day-to-day operational contact for parents during program hours.

Lowell School, a progressive school serving approximately 300 students in NW Washington, DC,is seeking a dedicated and dynamic After Care and Summer Program Coordinator. This is a 12-month, full-time, exempt leadership position responsible for the daily management, staffing, logistics, and quality assurance of our extended-day programs year-round. Reporting directly to the Director of Auxiliary Programs, you will serve as a key operational bridge among regular school hours, after-school enrichment, and summer programming. The position's primary goal will be to ensure that all before-care, after-care, break camp, and summer program activities deliver a safe, nurturing, highly organized, and progressively minded experience for children from preschool through 8th grade—extending Lowell's commitment to student agency, inquiry-based learning, and child-centered care into all out-of-scho

Key Responsibilities:

  • Program Operations: Manage end-to-end daily operations for before care, after care, and summer after care, overseeing student check-in/check-out, snack distribution, homework support, and activity rotations.
  • Summer and Break Camps: Serve as the full-time on-site coordinator for summer programming (December planning through July/August execution) and execute coverage programs during school breaks and professional development days.
  • Staff Leadership: Coordinate daily staff assignments to maintain required adult-to-child supervision ratios, while training and mentoring after-careassistants, enrichment instructors, and seasonal summer staff.
  • Student Care andSafety: Foster an inclusive, engaging community grounded in progressive educational practices, utilizing the Responsive Classroom approach, social-emotional learning principles, and student-driven activity design.
  • Family Communication: Serve as the primary day-to-day operational contact for parents during program hours, upholding exceptional customer service standards and drafting routine program announcements.

What You Bring to Lowell

  • Minimum threeto fiveyears of experience leading youth programs, after-school care, or summer camps, preferably within an independent school environment.
  • Ideally, a Bachelor's degree in education, youth development, recreation management, or a related field is preferred (a master's degree is a plus).
  • Exceptional interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with database/registration software (e.g., CampBrain, Veracross, Blackbaud) and Microsoft Office/Google Workspace.
  • Current certification in First Aid, CPR, and AED, or willingness to complete within 30 days of hire.
  • Working knowledge of or demonstrated commitment to progressive education practices (i.e., experiential learning, student agency, child-centered behavior guidance).
  • Familiarity with Responsive Classroom principles, positive behavior interventions, and DCchildcare licensing requirements.

Schedule and Physical Demands:

  • Academic Year: Regular working hours typically span 10 am–6 pm, Monday through Friday.
  • Summer & Break Camps: Hours typically span 8 am–6 pm, with flexibility required for early-release days and occasional evening school events.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to walk extensively across campus, stand for extended periods in various weather conditions, lift up to 25 lbs. of program supplies, and respond rapidly during emergencies.

Expected Salary Range and Benefits:

  • $55,000–60,000
