Job summary

The After School Program Leader at YMCA of Greater San Francisco provides meaningful opportunities for youth in elementary and middle schools, supervising groups and delivering inclusive curricula. Under supervision of Program Site Coordinators, you’ll demonstrate flexibility, initiative, and punctuality with the school-year schedule.

Responsibilities include designing engaging activities, supervising up to 20 students, and maintaining safety and records.

Qualifications

• 18+ for elementary programs; 21+ for middle school programs.
• Associate’s degree or higher, or high school diploma with 48+ college units or CBEST or District Exam.
• Strong teamwork and communication skills.
• Knowledge of youth development principles.
• Available Monday, Wednesday, Friday 11:00–2:00 (9/2/2026–6/16/2027).
• TB Test clearance within last 2 years.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement engaging, inclusive curricula reflecting youth development and cultural backgrounds.
• Facilitate academic enrichment, tutoring, and structured outdoor activities.
• Plan with staff, caregivers, and participants to enhance program offerings; supervision & safety.
• Supervise groups of up to 20 students, ensuring a safe, inclusive environment per safety protocols.
• Monitor participants, respond to incidents, and maintain safety documentation and records.
• Communicate clearly with participants, caregivers, staff, and volunteers to support a positive experience.
• Complete required safety and program training before first shift and attend mandatory meetings.

Requirements

Qualifications

• 18+ for elementary programs; 21+ for middle school programs.
• Associate’s degree or higher, or High School diploma/equivalent with one of the following:
• o 48+ completed college units (verified by transcript),
• o Passing score on the CA Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST), or
• o Passing score on a District Instructional Aide Exam.
• Strong teamwork and communication skills.
• Knowledge of youth development principles.
• Available Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 11:00 - 2:00 from 9/2/2026 - 6/16/2027
• TB Test clearance within last 2 years (required for programs on school district sites)

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in child development or related field OR equivalent professional and community experience.
• Experience working with elementary or middle school-aged youth.
• Bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, or other languages.
• Knowledge of arts, dance, drama, sports, or other enrichment areas.

• Design and implement engaging, inclusive, and theme-based curricula that reflect the developmental stages and cultural backgrounds of youth.
• Facilitate academic enrichment, tutoring, and structured outdoor recreational activities.
• Partner with staff, caregivers, and participants to plan and enhance program offerings.
  Supervision & Safety
• Supervise groups of up to 20 students, ensuring a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment in alignment with YMCA and child safety protocols.
• Actively monitor participants, respond promptly to incidents, and consistently apply safety guideline
  Record-Keeping & Compliance
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date program records, including attendance, emergency information, and safety documentation
  Communication & Engagement
• Communicate clearly and respectfully with participants, caregivers, staff, and volunteers to support a positive program experience.
  Training & Development
• Complete required safety and program training before the first shift and attend all mandatory meetings and training sessions.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

The After School Program Leader works in a dynamic environment at local elementary or middle school sites, including indoor classrooms and outdoor schoolyards. The role involves frequent standing, walking, and active participation in physical activities such as recreational sports and games. The environment can be fast-paced and loud, and the role may require occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds.
